Scintillating knocks from India opener Murali Vijay (155) and captain Virat Kohli (156 not out) deflated the Lankan bowlers on the opening day of third Test at Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday. The hosts ended the day at 371/4 with Kohli and Rohit Sharma (6*) unbeaten at the crease at stumps. Two quick wickets of Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane by Lakshan Sandakan towards the end of the day ruined a near perfect day for the Indians. By crossing the 150-run mark, Vijay recorded his fourth 150-plus score in Tests and Kohli recorded his eight 150-plus score in Tests. During his knock, Kohli became the first international captain to hit three successive hundreds in a three-Test series. In the process, he also completed his individual 5,000 runs in the longest format of the game. Kohli now has 11 international hundreds in a season, one less than Sachin Tendulkar's 12. Incidentally, this is also Kohli's first ever Test hundred at his home ground.
Earlier in the day, off-spinner Dilruwan Perera, who got his 100th Test scalp in taking opener Shikhar Dhawan early in the day. Perera had struck in his second over to send Dhawan packing for 23 after the left-handed opener top-edged a sweep to deep mid-wicket. Cheteshwar Pujara (23) was the second man out, caught at leg slip for 23 after flicking a delivery from paceman Lahiru Gamage. (Scorecard)

08:36 IST: India will also eye on equalling a record of most consecutive Test series wins. Currently they are on a eight-series winning streak and a win or a draw in Kotla will pull them level to the record which is jointly shared by Australia and England.
08:35 IST: After taking an unassailable 1-0 lead, India will aim to clinch the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
08:30 IST: Hello and welcome to the Live coverage from the opening day of the third Test between India and Sri Lanka at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.
The year 2018, starting with three Tests against South Africa followed by the two marquee away series -- five matches against England and four against Australia at the back-end of the year -- will define Kohli's character as a leader and also his ability of his team. Therefore, it will be a good chance for the likes of Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin to rack up some more enviable numbers which will do a world of good to their confidence. Facing a Sri Lankan side, which has been nothing short of an embarrassment, is not the greatest of challenges but for world's No 1 Test side, it will be an opportunity to get some much required match practice, which they unfortunately won't get in South Africa save a two-day game.
