Perth:
Marat Safin has withdrawn from the Hopman Cup mixed team tennis tournament due to a persistent knee problem.
He has been replaced in the Russian team by 20-year-old Teimuraz Gabashvili, who will now partner Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The Australian Open champion has struggled with tendinitis in his right knee and missed the Paris Masters and season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai in November.
The Hopman Cup begins on Friday with a qualifying match between China and the Netherlands.
Russia is in Group A with the United States, Sweden and Serbia-Montenegro. (AP)
