IPL Highlights: KXIP vs KKR
So that's from us for this game. Punjab have kept their hopes alive of qualifying with the win and will look to carry the momentum as they need to win every match to stand a chance. Kolkata, on the other hand, will be disappointed to keep things open till their last game as they look to secure a berth in the top two. So tomorrow, we have a dead rubber for you. Gujarat take on Delhi in Kanpur at 2000 local (1430 GMT). Until then, goodbye and take care.
Man of the Match, Mohit Sharma (translated from Hindi) says that since the last game didn't go well, they tried sticking to their plans tonight. Thought if Plan A didn't go well, then they'll shift to Plan B. States the margin of error is very less in this game, so had to be spot on with their lines and lengths. Adds that he thought 170 could have been defended, were in a bit of doubt though when Lynn and Narine went crazy at the start but then they stuck to their plans and brought things back in their favour.
Punjab captain, Glenn Maxwell says that his boys were brilliant today. Expected his team to be good on the field and says that they responded really well. Reckons that Axar Patel was sensational on the field and he led the others to do well. Appreciates Rahul Tewatia for his brilliant spin bowling. Reckons that their total was a par score as their top four batsmen could not set the platform for them. Mentions that his guys were really calm today and they knew what they had to do as they executed their plans really well. Ends by saying that they are still hanging by a thread and they would want to put pressure on the teams above them by winning.
Kolkata captain, Gautam Gambhir says he thought they started off really well. After six overs they (Himself, Uthappa and Pandey) faced a lot of dot balls and that added a lot of pressure on the other boys. Credits Punjab for bowling well and creating the pressure like they did on them. Wants to be smart, says he could have opened but since Sunil Narine has been hitting it well he sent him up the order. Though he mentions that there could be a change in the top order with him opening and Robin Uthappa coming in at No.3. Ends saying that by allowing the asking rate to rise till 10 or 11 runs an over, was the turning point and their eventual undoing tonight.
Rahul Tewatia was called in for a bowl and he spun the game back in the hosts' favour. His second over was crucial where he sent back the big names of Gambhir and Uthappa in a single over. Lynn kept the march on and registered yet another fifty but he hardly got any support from the other batsmen. Sandeep, Mohit and Henry bowled brilliantly in the death to snatch the match from the visitors' hand and keep their hopes alive.
Punjab have been sensational with the ball and they have got their much-needed win against Kolkata to stay in the contest. After posting a decent total on the board courtesy some brilliant stroke play from Maxwell and Saha, the hosts had to be terrific with the ball. They started off on a bad note as Narine and Lynn got off to a flying start. The former departed but the latter kept on going from his end, hammering it all around the park.
PUNJAB HAVE DONE IT! Maxwell punches his fists in the air in delight at the edge of the rope as his team has gotten over the line. Ripper of an over from Sandeep Sharma, he's given just 5 runs in it. Back of a length on the stumps, it's a slower one as Woakes is backing away. Too early into the heave and he bottom edges it back to the keeper on the bounce. That does it, magnificent win for the hosts. PUNJAB WIN BY 14 RUNS!
Dot ball, Sandeep Sharma just has to avoid bowling an illegal delivery and his side will be home. Full delivery well outside off, Woakes goes across to scoop it but fails to connect.
One more on the fuller side, hit down to long on for a single.
Not out! But what a ball from Sandeep Sharma, exceptional. Just wow. He bombs in another accurate yorker on middle, de Grandhomme digs it out back down the ground and comes back for the second as the long on fielder comes running in. The throw is at the striker's end and Colin has to drag his bat in. Saha takes the bails off and it goes upstairs. Replays show he's safe.
