Thomas Bach Renews Calls for Fight Against Corruption, Doping

International Olympic Committe president Thomas Bach has called for renewed efforts to combat the doping and corruption scandals that are undermining the credibility of international sports. (Read More in Other Sports)

Without specifically naming the corruption crisis at FIFA or the doping allegations surrounding Russia and the IAAF, Bach says the scandals are "particularly upsetting" because they "erode the trust in the clean athlete."

Bach says in a written statement that athletes "have to be protected from doping and corrupting influences." He urges sports bodies to safeguard their credibility by fighting match-fixing and other manipulation.

Bach also says good governance is essential for sports organizations to prevent corruption, a clear reference to the scandals at FIFA that have led to the arrests and indictments of about 30 soccer officials.

Bach made his comments as the IOC executive board discussed issues of ethics and good governance on the first day of a three-day meeting in Lausanne.
