The big-hitting all-rounder, will however, continue to play domestic Twenty20 tournaments. Watson will continue to feature in the Indian Premier League. He will turn out for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Watson played in 59 Test matches in which he scored 3731 runs and picked up 75 wickets. He was more prolific in ODIs, where he scored 5757 runs at an average of 40.54 and also picked 168 wickets in 190 matches. Watson was, however, subdued in the T20 format where he could only manage 1400 runs from 56 matches.
The 34-year-old all-rounder Watson achieved the remarkable feat of becoming Australia's most successful Test and one-day batting all-rounder after Steve Waugh.
"Shane should be proud of his contribution to Australian cricket," said Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland.
"At his best, he was a devastating batsman and skillful swing and seam bowler who thrilled crowds the world over. And to his enormous credit he is the only Australian batsman to have scored centuries in all three forms of the game.
"As a senior member of the team he always showed his leadership capabilities by guiding and encouraging younger players. He is also one of a very select group to lead our country in Test cricket," he added.
