London Olympics bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt will spearhead India's challenge on the last day of the wrestling competition in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Dutt will be a favourite in the 65 kg freestyle category. Pawan Kumar (86 kg) will the other medal hopeful while two women - Babita Kumari (55 kg) and Geetika Jhakar (63 kg) are a win away from clinching a medal. Babita will start from the quarterfinal round while Geetika is in the semis.
The wrestling competition, spread over three days, has run hot and cold for India. After winning a hattrick of gold medals on Tuesday, India lost four finals on Wednesday. The manner in which the defeats came was worrying. (CWG Day 7 Wrap)
Lalita Sehrawat lasted a little over half-a-minute, World championship bronze medallist Bajrang was outplayed in just over a minute and Sakshi Malik was on the mat just a little longer. All three were caught off-guard by their rivals. Only Satyawart Kadian put up a fight to go the full distance. But even he lost on technical points after the scores were level 4-4 with the Canadian wrestler Arjun Gill. Navjot Kaur won a bronze. India would have surely learnt their lessons.
India's first medal from track and field is expected tonight. Vikas Gowda should finish among the medals in men's discus. Gowda advanced to the final topping qualification round 1 at the Hampden Park Stadium. The silver medallist from the Delhi Games, four years ago, threw 64.32 metres to finish top of the qualification in both rounds. Gowda has a personal best throw of 66.28 metres and he is India's best bet to give the country its first medal from athletics in the Glasgow Games.
Former track queen PT Usha will be on her track side when Tintu Luka competes in the women's 800m semifinal. The 25-year-old Kerala girl advanced as a lucky loser after finishing fourth in Heat 3 with a timing of 2:02.74 seconds. A medal here will be a big surprise. Tonight, Krishna Poonia will also start her campaign in the women's discus event. The Olympian will have to summon her best to make the final rounds. She is definitely a medal hope.
With three more days left for the Games to end, India will expect a slew of medals from badminton, table tennis and squash. The team events over, it's time for the Indians to show their individual class. World championship medallist PV Sindhu and London Games quarterfinalist P. Kashyap will aim to advance to the quarterfinals alongside relatively lesser known names like Srikanth Kidambi and Gurusaidutt.
Sardar Singh's India will be on stage against South Africa. India's women lost to the South Africans on Wednesday to crash out of medal contention. They will now play for the fifth/sixth positions. The men, of course, will aim to do better after losing a well-contested match against the Australians 4-2. A draw against the Proteas should be enough to seal a semifinal spot from India's group.
England (105, including 38 gold medals) and Australia (106, including 35 gold) continue to lead the Commonwealth Games medal standings. Canada (51 with 22 gold), Scotland (39 - 13 gold), New Zealand (36 with 12 gold) and India (41 -- 10 gold) will certainly gun for the third spot as the Games hit the home stretch.
