Relieving Shikhar Dhawan of the burden of captaincy, Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday appointed West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy as the new captain of the side for the rest of the Indian Premier League season, hoping that the move will help the Indian bat more freely. Dhawan, however, failed to make an impact again, getting out for 19 against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.
Sammy, who was recently removed as West Indies' Test captain, was included in the side and straight away handed the captaincy role.
"We are hoping for a lot from Shikhar the batsman," VVS Laxman, mentor of the SRH side, said. (Standings | Fixtures)
Left-handed opener Dhawan has managed only 215 runs in his first 10 outings as captain. He has failed to hit a single half-century, managing a 45 as his best score.
With play-off berths are at the stake at the business end of the tournament, Hyderabad are not in a healthy position as they are struggling at sixth position.
Top four teams will qualify for the play-offs.
