Needing a win against Australia and chasing 161 on a tricky Mohali pitch, India were reduced to 49/3 at one stage, after the openers failed to fire.
Yuvraj Singh struggled with a twisted ankle before getting out with India at 94/4. Kohli took charge, as he has frequently done in the recent past, smashing a 51-ball 82 not out, studded with two sixes and nine fours.
The winning runs were scored by Dhoni, who heaved the first ball of the 20th over, a full toss served by James Faulkner, at long-on for a four. But for most part, the skipper watched Kohli's glorious innings from the non-striker's end.
Kohli celebrated India's win by going down on his knees and shunning his aggressive mannerisms like blowing kisses to dressing room or punching the air with his fist.
Kohli said Sunday's knock was one of his top three innings and that he was emotional about it.
