Ben Stokes starred with the ball in the first session of the fourth day of the opening Test as England beat India by 31 runs to take 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series on SaturdayThis victory also means that England won their 1000th Test match. Virat Kohli was key for the visitors as India needed 84 runs to win on Day 4. But superlative bowling performances from the England pacers did not let the visitors gatecrash their 1000th Test party. James Anderson struck in the very first over of the day removing Dinesh Karthik, which meant that the onus was on Kohli and Hardik Pandya to take India home. Both the right-handed batsmen kept India in the hunt as the Kohli scored his 17th Test fifty. However, a bowling change did the trick for the hosts as Ben Stokes trapped Kohli LBW right after he struck a patient 50.(Play fantasy league and win cash daily)
After Kohli's dismissal, the weight was transferred to Hardik's shoulder as he was joined by Ishant Sharma in the middle. A couple of boundaries from both Hardik and Ishant gave the Indian side a bit of hope. Looking for a miracle, Joe Root brought Adil Rashid in the bowling attack, who removed Ishant Sharma for 11. With one wicket needed for victory, the English camp was pumped up and looked to dismiss the last Indian batsman. Stokes, the English all-rounder, stole the show as he forced Hardik to poke at an away-going delivery which nestled in the safe pair of hands of Alastair Cook. Ben Stokes finished the match with figures of 6/113 and youngster Sam Curran was adjudged as Man of the Match. (SCORECARD)

15:10 IST: Hello and welcome to the live blog of the fourth day of the opening Test between India and England straight from the Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
The Delhi pacer recorded his 8th five-wicket haul, including three in an over, to leave India with a target of 194 to win with more than two days' play left. England's 1,000th Test had threatened to end in an embarrassing defeat with more than two days remaining as they collapsed to 87 for seven in their second innings. But Sam Curran had different plans. The star performer of England's second inning struck his maiden Test fifty, that came off just his second match in the longest format of the game. It was an impressive effort by the 20-year-old Curran, batting at No 8 which came just a day after the Surrey left-arm swing bowler had taken Test-best figures of four for 74.
"I had goosebumps listening to the Barmy Army chants and that first hour tomorrow (Saturday) is going to be crucial," Curran said. "If we can bowl well and take a couple up top, we will hopefully win." But it also showed the poor display by England's top order, with the next best score in the innings being Jonny Bairstow's 28, leaving India with a potentially awkward chase. It was also 20 runs more than their highest fourth-innings Test-winning total in England of 174 for six at The Oval in 1971 during their first victory in a Test on English soil.
Just what India needed and planned. Took them just 10 balls to wrap up the last wicket. England could only manage to add 2 runs to their overnight score. This is their fifth lowest score against India batting first at home. They didn't get to the psychological 300-run mark but now have work to do with the ball. India's first aim will be to bat well and see off the new ball. They will start their reply in a few minutes. Don't go anywhere.
OUT! Inswing, inswing and then an outswing which produces the edge. No fifer for Ashwin. But a good overall bowling performance from India. Shami serves this outside off, it moves away, Curran flirts with it and gets an edge which Karthik doesn't drop. ENGLAND ARE ALL OUT FOR 287.
Angles this into Curran who moves away and gets hit on his thigh pad.
Back of a length ball on off, Curran defends it down.
The ball is way outside the off stump, easy leave for Curran.
Mohammed Shami to bowl from the other end.
Short ball down the leg side, Anderson blocks it with a straight bat.
Jimmy has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
Ohh!!! Almost! Ashwin fires this one around off, the ball drifts in sharply and Anderson gets an inside edge towards fine leg. Will pick up a brace for it.
On middle and leg, played to short mid-wicket.
