WPL 2023, MI vs UPW Highlights: Grace Harris and Tahlia McGrath played quickfire knocks as UP Warriorz handed Mumbai Indians their first defeat of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL) season on Saturday. Chasing a target of 128, Harris hit 39 off 28 balls while McGrath played a cameo of 38 off 25 balls. Earlier, England's star left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (3/15) led the way with her excellent bowling as UP Warriorz bowled out formidable Mumbai Indians for 127 in their Women's Premier League match in Mumbai on Saturday. Had it not been for Issy Wong's 19-ball 32, MI would have ended with much less than what they eventually got. After their skipper Alyssa Healy opted to field first, the UP Warriorz bowlers did a commendable job to keep things tight against the strong and in-form Mumbai batting line-up. (Scorecard)
MI-W vs UPW-W, WPL Live Updates
We are back for the chase! The players are making their way out in the middle now. Alyssa Healy and Devika Vaidya are the two openers for UP. Natalie Sciver-Brunt to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Right then, Mumbai have posted a below-par total here, but looking at the wicket, Hayley Matthews and Saika Ishaque will be the key for them if they are to defend this total. UP knows that they have done the hard work with the ball and just needs to bat sensily to gun this total down. Let's see how the chase unfolds.
Sophie Ecclestone is in for a flash interview. She says that she is really happy with the performance. Adds that it was a good bowling display, especially the spinners. Reckons that this is a tricky wicket to play on. Shares that the message from Alyssa Healy for the batters has been to play smart cricket since the pitch has started to spin a lot towards the end.
UP were really good with the ball and did not allow the Mumbai batters with anything. Although, they were a bit sloppy in the field and dropped a few catches, their spinners were absolutely brilliant and made up for that by picking up wickets and not letting any partnership to build. Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti Sharma picked up two scalps each. Anjali Sarvani also chipped in with one as well. Along with the two wickets, Deepti Sharma also got two brilliant run outs which helped her side to bowl Mumbai out. Now, it it upto their batters to get the job done.
Mumbai got off to a really slow start as they scored their first boundary in the fourth over. They just couldn't get out of their shell and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Hayley Matthews looked good and scored some crucial runs before getting out and Harmanpreet Kaur also supported her well. However, Kaur was given out caught behind, but she successfully reviewed it. Then on the very next ball she got dismissed which was a set back for them. In the end Issy Wong played a quick-fire knock of 32 runs off just 19 balls and took her side to a respectable total.
An fine bowling effort from UP! They have managed to restrict Mumbai to their lowest total in the tournament so far. However, they know that getting to that will be a challenging task, but they have a real opportunity to hand Mumbai their first defeat.
OUT! RUN OUT! Mumbai have been bowled out on the last ball here. Deepti Sharma goes yorker length and outside off, Saika Ishaque digs this one out on the leg side and scampers across for a quick single. Deepti Sharma runs across to her right and picks the ball cleanly. She turns around and hits again, this time at the non-striker's end to catch Saika Ishaque short of her crease.
Full and outside off, Saika Ishaque swings her bat at it and connects with thin air.
Saika Ishaque is the last batter in for Mumbai.
OUT! RUN OUT! What a throw by Deepti Sharma! Fullish delivery on leg, Issy Wong creates room and thumps it down to long off. Issy Wong wants to return for the second but Jintimani Kalita hesitates a bit. Kiran Navgire throws it to Deepti Sharma at the non-striker's end who pouches it safely and chooses to have a go at the striker's end. Issy Wong isn't expecting the throw at her end and the replays show that she is just short of the crease.
FOUR! Slower and short on middle, Issy Wong allows the ball to come to her and pulls it right between deep mid-wicket and deep square leg for a boundary.
Switches to 'round the wicket and fires it full at the pads, Issy Wong goes for a heave but cannot get it away.
SIX! Straight hit! Deepti Sharma bowls it on a yorker length on middle and leg, Issy Wong goes deep in her crease and manages to get underneath the delivery. Lofts it over long off and collects a maximum.
Deepti Sharma (3-0-24-2) to bowl the last over.
Low full toss on middle, Issy Wong whips this one to deep mid-wicket and keeps the strike with a single.
Full this time and on off, Jintimani Kalita drives it along the ground towards long off for a single.
Short and outside off, Issy Wong punches it off the back foot to long off for a run.
Nails the yorker on middle, Issy Wong can only dig this one out down the wicket.
Slower and short on off by Sophie Ecclestone, Issy Wong makes room to cut this one through covers but misses.
