Second day's highlights:
# Alastair Cook became the tenth player to complete 7,000 runs in Test Cricket for England. At 27 years 347 days, he has become the youngest to achieve the feat in Tests, eclipsing Sachin Tendulkar's feat of reaching 7000 runs in 28 years 193 days.
# Cook took 151 innings to reach 7,000 runs - the third fastest for England, next only to Wally Hammond(131) and Kevin Pietersen (150).
# With his 23rd hundred (136 not out), Cook holds a record for most centuries in Tests for England.
# Cook is the fourth England batsman to post three centuries in a Test series against India, joining Ken Barrington (1961-62), Graham Gooch (1990) and Michael Vaughan (2002).
# Cook is the fifth overseas player to register three or more centuries in a Test series against India in India - the first four being Everton Weekes (4), Gary Sobers, Ken Barrington and Hashim Amkla.
# Cook's aforesaid knock is the highest individual innings by an England captain at Eden Garden. Tony Greig is the only other England skipper to post a century - 103 in January 1977.
# Alastair Cook and Nick Compton have posted their fourth consecutive fifty-plus partnership in the series - 123 at Motera, 66 & 58 (unbroken) at Wankhede Stadium and 165 at Eden Gardens.
# Compton and Cook have averaged 109.50 for the first wicket in five outings in the present series - their aggregate being 438, including two hundreds and two fifty-plus.
# The 165-run stand is a first wicket record for England against India at Eden Gardens, Kolkata - their second highest in India, behind the 178 between Graeme Fowler and Tim Robinson at Chepauk, Chennai in January 1985.
# The above partnership is the sixth highest for the first wicket for England against India in Tests.
# Nick Compton (57) has posted his first fifty in Tests.
# Ishant Sharma has recorded his 15th duck in Tests - his third against India.
# Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52) has posted his 27th fifty in Tests - his seventh against England.
# Dhoni enjoys a superb record at Eden Gardens, amassing 415 runs in five innings at an average of 138.33, including two hundreds and three half-centuries. He has recorded three fifty-plus innings in a row for the first time at this venue - 132 not out against South Africa in February 2010; 144 against West Indies in November 2011 and 52 against England in December 2012.
# With 493 runs at an average of 164.33, Cook has set a record for the highest runs' tally by an England captain in a Test series against India on Indian soil, eclipsing Ted Dexter's tally of 409 (ave.58.42) in five matches in 1961-62.
# Cook became the first left-handed England player to post three hundreds in a Test series against India. He became the fourth left-handed batsman to record the feat against India, joining Garry Sobers (twice), Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Matthew Hayden.
# Sobers and Cook are the only two left-handed skippers to have posted three centuries in the same Test series against India.
