India looked set to achieve a record run chase after stand-in captain Virat Kohli (141) and opener Murali Vijay (99) led India through a second session without loss.
But Australia took eight wickets in the final session, the match ended by Lyon on a stumping for the final wicket, prompting emotional celebrations by an Australia team playing its first match since the death of teammate Phillip Hughes two weeks ago in a domestic match.
Australia captain Michael Clarke suffered yet another hamstring injury and is doubtful for the second test beginning Wednesday in Brisbane.

Michael Clarke - He's happy with the win. Credits Kohli first for his superb knock, then Lyon, Warner and Steven Smith for their game in this match. (On Kohli's knock) Says it was one of the best second innings knocks he has seen. He knew this Australian team is not scared of losing. Credits the Australian players once again for playing such cricket. He thinks he doesn't look like taking further part in the series. He is better off not talking about the injury right now. Says it's a special win and his boys will be very proud.
Virat Kohli - Says it was a great game of cricket. His boys put a strong fight and he's happy with their belief and character. He believed that his team would win. Asked his players to believe in themselves last night that they would chase down this total. Credits the Australian team for putting such a fight and he plays like them, like a fighter. Adds had he and Vijay added few more runs, the game would have been different. (On the shot he got out) He was trying to hit in front of square but miscued. He backed himself throughout. He loves playing against Australia and the fight put up by them.
Man of the Match - Nathan Lyon! Says it is tough out there, the crowd stayed behind them. Credit goes to the curators for making such a wicket. This venue is pretty special for him. Adds there were couple of tough decisions and he was lucky that he won one of them. Says it's Test cricket, can turn around at any time. Credits Kohli and Vijay and says they're superstars. He believed in himself that he could give Australia this win.
There were lots of heroes in this match. David Warner and Virat Kohli scored twin tons. Michael Clarke scored a heroic century. Steven Smith scored a ton as well. Nathan Lyon grabbed a 5-fer in the first innings and took a 7-fer in the all important second innings.
It was a close contest throughout. Australia posted a big total first up and then India replied strongly too, giving Australia a slender lead. Australia declared in their second innings as well and gave India a target of 364 runs. India almost came close but not close enough to register a historic win at the Adelaide Oval.
Anything could have happened and the match hung in balance. The Indians were pretty close to chasing down a big target but it was just not good enough. The Aussie bowlers, Nathan Lyon in particular grabbed those remaining eight wickets and helped their team lead the 4-match series 1-0!
The Australian never-say-die-attitude says it all! India started off the final session requiring 159 runs with eight wickets in hand. Things were going perfect for them but eventually there was a big collapse. Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay brought India to a strong position but the middle order failed completely, succumbed under pressure as Nathan Lyon was bowling beautifully. He grabbed seven wickets and gave Australia a famous win!
OUT! NATHAN LYON HAS DONE IT! Ishant uses his feet and Lyon bowls it down the leg side. Haddin, the stand in captain does the rest, whips off the bails and stumps Ishant Sharma. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 48 RUNS! The Australian team gather around, hug each other near the huge 408 mark on the ground.
Lyon back on!
