The irregularities in the conduct of the Queen's Baton Relay in London in 2009, which led to Suresh Kalmadi's arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) here Monday, was the first in a series of allegations against the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.
Kalmadi was alleged to have given contracts at higher rates to AM Films and AM Car and Van Hire Ltd during the Baton Relay. The company was paid 127,712 pounds without any written contract.
A two-member CBI team of additional director V.K. Gupta and the DIG, S.K. Palsania, was sent to London to investigate the owner Ashish Patel, who reportedly provided them all the information and documents with regard to the allegedly overvalued deal.
Kalmadi maintained that the company was recommended by the Indian high commission, which later denied having done so.
