Yuvraj Singh became the costliest player of the Indian Premier League once again, but there is no guarantee that he will captain his new team, Delhi Daredevils. Gary Kirsten, the Delhi Daredevils head coach, has hinted to NDTV that captaincy was yet to be been decided. After being released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi spent a record Rs 16 crore in Monday's auction to sign Yuvraj for IPL 2015.
Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan skipper in all format of the game, was also signed by Delhi for Rs 7.50 crore and will be in the reckoning to lead the team. (Yuvraj Singh deserves every penny: Gavaskar)
Talking about the rationale behind going after 2011 World Cup star Yuvraj, who failed to make the World Cup squad, Kirsten said the team were looking for a good, solid Indian player.
"Yuvraj for us, was an important pick. We needed a good, solid Indian player. We knew he'd be expensive and we expected to get him for something between 12 and 14 crore," Gary Kirsten told NDTV.
"We had a poor season last year and wanted to rebuild again. There weren't many big Indian batsmen up for grabs. Yuvraj is lucky that he is so sought-after," Kirsten added.
Captain or not, Yuvraj is already looking forward to the experience of re-uniting with South African Kirsten, who was in-charge of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 2011.
