No cricket stadium in the country has ever erupted in as much joy as Eden Gardens did when Murali Vijay fell on Thursday. It was a sign for a legend to walk in. Fans here stood up and gave a rapturous welcome to Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar as he made his way in - small but confident steps to take guard.
West Indies had struck with two quick wickets on Day 2 but fans at Eden Gardens were only to eager to see the Little Master take strike in the middle. So, when Vijay was stumped by West Indies, the only celebration that exceeded that of the tourists was the one in the stands. (Live updates)
Tendulkar has played several heroic knocks at this venue but hardly has a batting effort been appreciated as much before even beginning, hardly has a run to get off the mark been applauded as it was on Thursday. Tendulkar's hit to point to get off the mark and his subsequent shots to the fence off Shane Shillingford kept the party going in the stands - one that will reach its climax at Wankhede where the legend will play his final Test.
