President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday congratulated the Indian cricket team for launching their World Cup title defence by recording a big victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in Adelaide.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men on Sunday defeated Pakistan by 76 runs at the Adelaide Oval to maintain their unbeaten run against their bitter-rivals in the 50-over World Cup.
In his message to Indian captain Dhoni, the President said: "My congratulations to you and all members of the Indian Cricket team on the victory in the first match of ICC World Cup 2015 against Pakistan.
"The nation is proud of your achievement. I wish you continued success in the coming matches and am confident that the team will bring further glory to India," he said.
In the high-voltage match, India emerged victorious in a rather one-sided affair, thus maintaining their magnificent record against Pakistan by winning the sixth consecutive World Cup game since the rivalry started way back in 1992.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also congratulated the Indian team for their stupendous win over arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening match.
"Congrats Team India. Well played. We are all very proud of you," PM Modi said in his message.
