Australia have reposed faith in enigmatic cricketer Glenn Maxwell and backed the all-rounder to come good in the impending 2015 World Cup.
Maxwell, a destructive right-arm batsman and a handy off-spinner, was included in Australia's 15-man squad for the mega event Sunday despite a string of mediocre performances in the ongoing Twenty20 Big Bash League.
Maxwell has came in for sharp criticism for his indifferent form both with the bat and the ball but returned to his big-hitting ways Saturday, blasting a match-winning 44-ball 66 for the Melbourne Stars win against the Melbourne Renegades.
And his inclusion was believed to be as much about his exploits with the ball as it is for his damaging capabilities with the bat. (Harris Ignored for World Cup, to Focus on Ashes)
"Maxi is Maxi," Cricket Australia (CA) chairman of selectors Rodney Marsh was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au here Sunday.
"We've got the utmost faith in Glenn Maxwell as a cricketer, and as a bloke. He'll do well, because he's in our 15. They'll all do well."
Australia's World Cup campaign begins February 14 against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
