Preview:
With an eye on a podium finish in Rio Olympics next year, Hockey India have done almost everything right so far. From appointing the right support staff to warm-up games against top teams will help chief coach Roelant Oltmans iron out the edges. The series against Australia will help identify the shortcomings for sure.
India will hope for a winning start at the recently inaugurated Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel International Stadium but Dutchman Oltmans knows the Aussies will be tough nuts.
"We have had a couple of good training sessions and the boys are looking forward to take on Australia. They are a formidable team and we are confident of putting on a good show in front of the home crowd," said Oltmans.(PR Sreejesh Receives Kerala Sports Award)
Both teams have to guard against injuries to key players. India were dealt a body blow when striker Lalit Upadhyay was injured during the Bangalore camp. He suffered a hairline fracture and was replaced by Mohammed Amir.
Besides Lalit, another striker Nikkin Thimmaiah was also dropped from the squad because of a shoulder injury which he sustained during the last tour to New Zealand.
Top Teams for Hockey League Finals
Top eight teams of the world -- Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain, Argentina, India and Canada will be competing in the Hockey World League Finals.
India have been clubbed in a tough Pool B alongside Germany, The Netherlands and Argentina, while Pool A consists of Australia, Belgium, Great Britain and Canada.
"We are making progress day by day and we have got a mix of young and experienced players in the side to take on top teams like Australia, Germany and The Netherlands," Oltmans said.
"I understand in India everyone believes in the final outcome but I believe in the process. The most important thing is if our process is right results will automatically come," the top coach added.
