Riding on the maiden century from all-rounder Chris Woakes, England stretched their lead to 250 runs in their first innings on Day 3 of the Lord's Test against India as bad light stopped play 30 minutes before the scheduled time. Chris Woakes was unbeaten on 120 at stumps and was batting alongside Sam Curran (22) as the hosts piled up 357 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. The 189-run crucial partnership for the sixth wicket between Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes took England out of trouble after the hosts found themselves reeling on 131 for 5 just after tea. Both the England middle-order batsmen showed brilliant temperament and application when Indian pacers were bowling terrific spells. The duo negotiated the swinging deliveries and played the Indian spinners with patience. While Chris Woakes slammed his maiden ton, his team-mate Jonny Bairstow missed out on a hundred getting dismissed on 93 runs. For India, an eventful opening session ended on a dismal note as the team managed to pick only two wickets in the last two sessions of the day. (SCORECARD)

14:30 IST: Hello and welcome to the Live coverage from Day 3Â of the second Test at Lord's.
A crucial sixth-wicket partnership between Chris Woakes and wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow took England out of trouble and put them in a dominant position as the hosts stretched their lead to 123 runs at tea on Day 3 of the Lord's Test against India. Resuming the post-lunch session at 89 for four, England lost Jos Buttler (24) early in the second session of the day as Mohammed Shami trapped him in front of the stumps. But post the Buttler dismissal, all-rounder Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow played with patience and caution against the Indian pacers. Bairstow during his impressive knock brought up his 19th Test half-century. Chris Woakes following his senior partner notched up his fifth fifty in Test cricket. For India, apart from Mohammed Shami there was no joy for any other Indian bowler in the second session. Spin bowling did not look threatening as both England batsmen played Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav with ease. At tea, Jonny Bairstow was batting on 62 runs alongside Chris Woakes on 55 runs.
Pacer Mohammed Shami struck in the final over before lunch as India reduced England to 89 for four on Day 3 of the second Test at Lord's. After an average start by the bowlers on the third day, Indian pace duo of Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami improved their line and length as time wore on, creating a few problems for the English batsmen. Both England openers Keaton Jennings (11) and Alastair Cook (21) got out in quick succession and England at one stage were 32 for the loss of 2 wickets. But skipper Joe Root along with debutant Ollie Pope steadied England and steered the team out of trouble. But just as the 45-run partnership was looking strong, Hardik Pandya trapped Ollie Pope (28) in front of the stumps to give India a crucial breakthrough. Joe Root (19) too got out on the fourth ball of the 24th over as umpires decided to go for lunch immediately after. England still trail India by 18 runs in the first innings.
Both Kohli and Rahane survived the early jitters from the English pacers to start the rebuilding work with a 34-run fourth wicket stand before the in-form India captain fell to Chris Woakes. Kohli, who was looking all at sea against Woakes, finally fell to the right-armer in his third over, with Jos Buttler making no mistake this time at second slip. Thereafter, wickets began to fall in heaps with Hardik Pandya (10) falling to Woakes before left-armer Sam Curran took Dinesh Karthik's (1) stumps for a ride.
Ashwin then joined Rahane in the middle to add 22 runs for the seventh wicket before the old warhorse James Anderson came back to add more misery to the visitors with the dismissal of the Mumbai batsman. Rahane, who did all the hard work to survive 44 deliveries, nicked Anderson's straight delivery to first slip Alastair Cook.
Anderson immediately jolted India by trapping chinaman Kuldeep Yadav (0) plumb in front with a brilliant in-swinger, which the television replays also ruled in favour of the hosts. Anderson's new ball partner Stuart Broad then joined the party with the wicket of Ashwin, who looked good during his 38-ball stay, that also included four brave hits to the fence.
Towards the end, tailender Mohammed Shami struck a few lusty blows to guide India to the three-figure mark before fellow quick Ishant Sharma (0) was trapped by Anderson. Play fantasy league and win cash daily
Jonny Bairstow missed out on his ton yesterday but Chris Woakes continued on, smashed his maiden century and stole the limelight. For India, Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers. He bowled with intent and picked up three wickets but the rest of the bowlers largely struggled. The tourists are staring down the barrel, trailing by 289. Can they lift themselves up? Or will England affect a collapse under the dark clouds? An absorbing passage awaits, provided the rain doesn't interfere. Join us on the other side of the break.
When you are struggling, sometimes the best way to get out of it is to be positive and attack. Woakes and Bairstow did just that and came out with flying colours. From a tricky position, they managed to not only break the morale of the visitors but actually dominated them. Their 189-run stand took the game away from the tourists.
So, the declaration has come from Joe Root as England finish in pole position. A brilliant show from the duo of Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes has given them a massive lead of 289. The latter along with Curran also added 39 quick runs this morning to help their cause. Yes, England were struggling in the initial phases. They had lost 2 wickets for only 32 on the board. A brief resistance from Root and Pope was also cut short but then the star pair got into the act.
OUT! Pandya strikes and there comes the declaration from Joe Root! Good length delivery around off, Curran backs away and goes after it but gets a top edge that flies towards third man. Shami stationed there pouches it safely. ENGLAND HAVE DECLARED ON 396/7!
Hardik Pandya comes for a bowl.
Woakes moves away to loft this one towards sweeper cover and takes a couple. 17 from this one.
FOUR! Runs coming thick and fast for England! Fullish ball attacking the stumps, Chris throws the kitchen sink at it but gets an outside edge past the slip cordon. 15 from the over already.
Full ball, driven crisply to mid on for a run.
Sprays this one down the leg side, Curran tries to flick it away but misses.
SIX! What a shot! Seemed like he had got beaten for pace but he still connected beautifully. Well-directed short ball on middle and off, Curran makes a bit of room and pulls it hard over mid-wicket. It is going, going and sails into the stands. The signal might have been to go for the runs. Declaration seems to be around the corner.
