India registered a nine-wicket win at Edgbaston on Tuesday to seal their first bilateral ODI series win in England since 1990. The triumph also ensured Mahendra Singh Dhoni become India's most successful ODI captain with 91 victories. The composed cricketer though chose to remain modest and credited the team for playing dominant cricket. (Highlights)
Featuring in his 162nd match as ODI skipper, Dhoni led his team to a commanding performance against England. After the recent rout in the Tests, the pressure was on Dhoni but his team out-skilled Alastair Cook & Co. in coloured kits to win their third consecutive ODI on the trot and seal the five-match series 3-0.
"We have a good team with a bunch of very talented youngtsers," he said at the post-match ceremony. "While it difficult to win all the time, we have also had some good guidance from seniors and that has helped."
Chasing 207 for victory, Rahane slammed his maiden ton and finished with 106 runs while Dhawan remained unbeaten on 97. Both batsmen got a nod of approval from Dhoni. "It is important for us that openers get going. It is not always about hundreds but to last the first 10-12 overs," he said. "Rahane has always been third in line, after Rohit (Sharma) and Dhawan."
Dhoni also said that Tuesday's knock from Rahane would give India options to make changes in the batting order. "I personally feel it (opening) is a good slot for him (Rahane) and that it suits him. It means Rohit can come in the middle for us."
Dhoni also praised his bowlers for their contribution in India's all-round effort in a commendable win. "The fast bowlers set it up, because they took wickets and when the spinners came the batting was under pressure."
With England clearly down and out after being thoroughly outplayed in the series so far, Dhoni & Co. can now focus on sweeping the ODI series 4-0 in the fifth and final game at Leeds on Friday.
