Ravichandran Ashwin has established himself as an asset for India in ODIs. On Saturday, he reaffirmed his worth with a splendid 3/39 that helped India restrict England to 227 and eventually win the third match of five-ODI series by six wickets at Trent Bridge.
The skilled spinner's figures were his best against this side - bettering 3/40 at The Oval in 2011. (Scorecard | Report | Match in pics)
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss earlier and while England got off to a good start - 82/0 in 17.5 at one stage, it came apart for the hosts once the slower bowlers began weaving their magic. While the opening stand was broken by Suresh Raina - his only success with the ball in the innings, Ashwin broke England's back with his calm but determined bowling. The 27-year-old Tamil Nadu bowler removed Eoin Morgan (10) before he could get a start and returned to skittle out Ben Stokes (2) and a dangerous Jos Buttler (42). His three strikes took his overall ODI wickets tally to 111 from 81 matches. Interestingly, it is the second highest by a bowler without a single instance of four wickets or more in an innings in ODIs - the highest being 122 (ave.35.02) in 149 matches by Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez. While Ashwin did take top honours and a man-of-the-match award at Trent Bridge - his second in ODIs and first against England, India benefited from an overall display of quality bowling. (Kohli, Stokes in a Verbal Spat)
