Who Gave Anil Kumble His Nickname 'Jumbo'?

Anil Kumble, India's newly appointed head coach has revealed it was Navjot Singh Sidhu who nicknamed him 'Jumbo' during a Q/A session on Twitter on Tuesday.

India is scheduled to play four Tests against the West Indies, starting July 21. While the team has already departed for the West Indies, Kumble - who will join the side in a few days' time - gladly obliged and replied to fans with 30-second video responses in the session conducted on BCCI's official Twitter handle.

"My nickname was coined by none other than Navjot Singh Sidhu," Kumble said when asked about his famous nickname.

"It was during Irani Trophy game when I was playing for Rest of India at Kotla [Feroz Shah Kotla]. He was standing at his customary position, mid-on. One of the balls really took off and he said 'Jumbo Jet.' While the 'Jet' got dropped off, just the 'Jumbo' remained. So ever since all my teammates call me Jumbo," he added.

In 2006, it was Kumble's 'Jumbo' performance that helped India seal a historic series win against the West Indies at Kingston in 2006.

Defending a target of 269, Kumble ran through West Indies' batting order by picking up 6/78 to help India win the match by 49 runs. It also sealed the four-match series 1-0, ensuring India won a series in the West Indies after 35 years. With 23 wickets in four matches, he was also the leading wicket-taker of the series.

Kumble, who is India's highest wicket-taker in both Tests and ODIs, also said he didn't have the habit of mass bunking classes but as cricket consumed majority of his time, it became hard for him to attend every engineering class.

"I probably was a bad example of a sports student. I never bunked classes whenever there were no matches. I was not the greatest guy amongst my sportsmen friends because they hated me. Yes, I hardly had time to go to college because there was a lot of cricket to be played those days."  

Kumble, who also happens to be a passionate photographer, promised one of his fans that he'll carry his camera to West Indies to capture India's winning moments.

"Yes I'll surely be carrying my camera to the West Indies. People will get to see some images of the team probably in a beach or the games as well. The winning shots will actually be great," he concluded.
