Australia chose to field and had New Zealand in trouble at 74/4 but McCullum, along with Corey Anderson, changed the entire course of the match. In the process, McCullum blasted a world record century that gave the fans at the Hagley Oval plenty to cheer. Here are a list of the statistical achievements by McCullum.
- McCullum smashed the fastest Test century off just 54 balls, breaking the record which was jointly held by Sir Vivian Richards of West Indies and Misbah-ul-Haq of Pakistan. Both batsmen had scored a century off 56 balls. Richards achieved the feat against England in Antigua in 1986 while Misbah achieved it against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2014.
- McCullum blasted 21 fours and six sixes in his knock of 145. His six sixes takes his overall tally of sixes in Tests to 106, the most hit by a batsmen in the history of Test cricket.
- The partnership between McCullum and Corey Anderson was worth 179 off 110 balls. The run-rate maintained in the partnership was 9.76, which is the highest ever in Test cricket.
- McCullum has a fabulous record at the Hagley Oval. In two matches, he has scored two centuries, with 340 runs at an average of 170 and a strike-rate of 159.62. He has blasted 17 sixes at this venue, which is the most in any venue.
- In 101 Tests, McCullum has hit a total of 106 sixes. He is only the fifth player in Test history to have hit more sixes than the number of matches played. Adam Gilchrist hit 100 sixes in 96 Tests, Chris Cairns hit 87 sixes in 62 Tests, Andrew Flintoff hit 82 sixes in 79 Tests and surprisingly, Tim Southee of New Zealand has hit 58 sixes in 48 Tests, more than AB de Villiers, Sourav Ganguly and Kumar Sangakkara.
