Stuart Broad produced an unbelievable spell of bowling to rip through Australia on the opening day of the fourth Test in Trent Bridge. The Aussies, who are trailing the series 2-1, were bowled out for 60 after Broad completed his 14th five-wicket haul and pocketed eight wickets.
Having been designated as the leader of the attack in the absence of James Anderson, Broad responded in tremendous fashion by dismantling the Australian top order in a memorable spell of bowling. (The Ashes: Stuart Broad Backed to Prove There's Life After James Anderson)
In the first over, he took just three balls to send back Chris Rogers for his first Test duck and more importantly, Broad had joined an illustrious list. He became the fifth England bowler to take 300 wickets in Tests and he responded with another wicket in the same over. Steven Smith, who had scored a double-century in Lord's, was out in the final ball and suddenly they were 10 for 2 in the first over.
The misery deepened for Australia when Shaun Marsh was caught at third slip for 0 while Adam Voges was caught brilliantly by a diving Ben Stokes at fifth slip. The demolition was complete when Michael Clarke, who was under immense pressure, slashed at a wide ball to compound his woeful run. The Australian skipper had fallen to Broad for the 11th time in Tests and Australia were 29 for 6. (Stuart Broad Wary of 'Dangerous' Michael Clarke)
Just like against South Africa in Newlands in 2011 where they were reeling at 21 for 9, the tail once again ensured that Australia avoided the ignominy of being bowled out for their lowest total in Tests, which was 36 against England in 1902. It got better for Broad as he got the two Mitchells, Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson in the seventh over to have figures of 8-4-11-7. Broad completed the job in grand style as he picked up Nathan Lyon for nine to end up with figures of 9.3-5-15-8, his best figures in Tests.ÂÂ
Australia were bowled out for 60 in just 18.3 overs, which was their seventh-lowest total in Tests.
