Somdev fights but Murray prevails

Andy Murray needed 1 hour, 10 minutes to win his first set, then breezed through the next two, advancing to the second round of the U.S. Open with a 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-3 victory Wednesday over India's Somdev Devvarman.

Murray, in search of his first grand slam title, was leading top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the final at Cincinnati earlier this month when Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury for only his second loss of the year.

Since reaching the final here in 2008, Murray has failed to make the quarter-finals the past two years, a trend he's hoping to reverse.

After surrendering an early break in the opening set Murray managed to force the tiebreaker and from there grind out the win.

Murray next faces Robin Haase of the Netherlands, who beat Portugal's Rui Machado 6-0, 6-4, 6-4
