"Thirimanne was found to have breached article 2.1.5 of the Code of Conduct which relates to showing dissent at an umpire's decision during an international match," the ICC said.
Thirimanne admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft, the ICC added. The exact amount of the fine was not disclosed since players' match fees are not made public.
Thirimanne added 127 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Angelo Mathews, before his dismissal triggered a collapse in which Sri Lanka lost their last seven wickets for 65 runs.
Sri Lanka leads the three-match series 1-0 after winning the first Test in Galle by 63 runs.
