The latest season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) got underway on Friday with a thrilling match between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, followed by the clash of mentor and mentee as Rishabh Pant went head-to-head against MS Dhoni in his first match as captain of Delhi Capitals. The IPL always brings about thrill and excitement among fans, and it was no different for Indian cricket board president Sourav Ganguly. "2 outstanding games to start at IPL 21 ...loved watching at the ground," Ganguly wrote in an Instagram post.
The season-opener saw RCB edge a last-ball thriller against Mumbai Indians in Chennai. Harshal Patel struck the season's first five-wicket haul for the Virat Kohli-led team, and then AB de Villiers again shone with the bat as they completed their chase off the last delivery.
The second match saw Rishabh Pant make his captaincy debut against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede stadium.
After Suresh Raina hit a half-century for CSK in his IPL comeback match, Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan's stunning 138-run opening stand powered DC to a comfortable 7-wicket win.
IPL 2021 saw the cash-rich league return to India after the previous season was played at the United Arab Emirates due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In Sunday's game, Eoin Morgan's Kolkata Knight Riders will take on David Warner-led SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
