Everyone knew that Gautam Gambhir is a solid batsman, but just after two years as skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders, people are beginning to notice his strengths as a captain. And while he may not be 'Captain Cool' like Dhoni or 'Captain Aggressive' like Ganguly, Gauti's success mantra is to be a leader and not a skipper.
Another reason why Gambhir is being tagged as a good captain is because he has been consistently leading by example. This season, he finished second behind only Chris Gayle in the leading run-getters list.
Gambhir is a man who wears his heart on his sleeve and has turned around the fortunes of KKR within two seasons. He might come across as a man with a quick temper, but make no mistake about it, inside that hot head ticks a shrewd cricketing brain.
Respect can't be bought, it has to be earned and Gambhir is someone who seems to command the respect of his players, primarily because he puts team before self.
Like when he gave his Man of the Match award versus Chennai in the league stage to Debabrata Das, because the youngster finished off the match for KKR.
KKR's bowling coach Wasim Akram said: "We have a great captain...He's very involved with the boys."
Like any other team, the Knight Riders too have reaped the benefits of outstanding individual performances through season 5 of the IPL but ask Gambhir to rate a performance and he will make sure he includes the whole team in his assessment. "It's not just Jacques Kallis, all the bowlers did really well," he said.
It took the Kolkata fans some time to accept Gauti as their new skipper. After all, he did replace the Prince of Bengal - Sourav Ganguly. But it wouldn't be wrong to say that he might just be the new Dada of Kolkata.
