A century by Joe Root helped England take the honours on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test match against India, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. England were 263 for three at stumps after 89.3 overs with captain Joe Root unbeaten on 128 after England had won the toss and elected to bat. The visitors got off to a good start but were dealt a double blow before the lunch break with opener Rory Burns and Dan Lawrence dismissed. With play resuming after lunch, Dominic Sibley and Root anchored England's innings, and dominated India's bowling department. Root slammed 128 not out off 197 balls, consisting of 14 fours and a six. Meanwhile, opener Sibley lost his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah in the final over of the day, and scored 87 from 286 deliveries. Root and Sibley's knocks proved to be pivotal for England, as they put the visitors in a strong position. For the home side's bowling department, Bumrah registered two dismissals and Ashwin took a wicket. India will be hoping for a more productive Day 2, while the visitors will look to build on their momentum. (SCORECARD)
