Mahendra Singh Dhoni's ODI tons a bad omen for India?

No doubt the Indian captain played one of his best ODI knocks of late but Mahendra Singh Dhoni had little to cheer about as his team lost the match by four wickets against Australia in the third game of the seven-match series at Mohali.

Captain Cool conquered pain and a hostile pace bowling to steady a rocking Indian ship and become the first Indian to score a century at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali.

However, amidst the records broken by Dhoni on Saturday, there was one fact that Dhoni would want to set right as soon as possible - scoring hundred in an Indian win. His last century in an Indian win came way back on January 7, 2010 when his 101* off 107 balls took India to a 6-wicket victory over Bangladesh at Mirpur. Dhoni's previous ODI ton - a fighting 113 against Pakistan on December 30, 2012 - took the team out of doldrums after top order failed miserably. India lost that game by 6 wickets. Coincidentally, Dhoni's above numbers mirror Sachin Tendulkar's last three years in ODI cricket for India. Statistically speaking, Sachin's last three hundreds in ODI cricket could not yield a win for the Men in Blue. His 100th international ton, versus Bangladesh unfortunately came at a game that India lost only to be knocked out of the 2012 Asia Cup. Sachin's double ton - the first-ever in ODIs - was his last century that came in a winning cause for India, way back on February 24, 2010. Following which, his 120 versus England in Bangalore during the 2011 World Cup came in a tied game and almost a fortnight later his 111 against South Africa came in a nerve-wracking loss at Nagpur. Meanwhile, moving over to Australia's stunning win on Saturday, there were many statistical highs that players from both teams achieved and went past.

# This was Dhoni's ninth century in ODIs - second against Australia.

# He reached 5000 runs as an ODI captain, becoming the seventh skipper to do so and third Indian after Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly.

# Out of the 7516 runs he has scored in ODIs, Dhoni has scored 5039 runs as captain, registering a whopping 67 per cent of career runs as the skipper.

# Dhoni has scored most of his ODI runs batting at No. 6 position, scoring 19 fifties. His 139 not out on Saturday was his one and only hundred at this position.

# Dhoni registered his 250th six in international cricket, becoming the second Indian to do so after Sachin, who has 264 international sixes. To achieve 250 sixes, Sachin took 780 innings, while, Dhoni only in 363 outings.

# Dhoni's 139 not out is the highest score by any captain against Australia in ODIs. Previous best was also by Dhoni when he scored 124 against the Aussies on October 28, 2009 at Nagpur.

# Yuvraj Singh has scored 49 runs in five innings (average of 9.80) at his Ranji Trophy home ground. On Saturday, he was dismissed for his second golden duck at Mohali - first being bowled by Wahab Riaz in the 2011 World Cup semifinal versus Pakistan.

# George Bailey has scores of 82, 87, 4, 85, 92* & 43 in his last 6 innings.

# Adam Voges (76*) registered his 4th ODI fifty, his highest score against India.

# James Faulkner (64* off 29 balls) achieved his career-best score in ODIs, his second fifty and first against India. His previous best was 54 against England in Birmingham on June 8, 2013.

# By conceding 30 runs in the 48th over of the Australian innings, Ishant Sharma equalled Yuvraj's record for most expensive over ever bowled by an Indian in ODIs.
