The India-Australia series was touted to be a battle between the seniors in the two teams but at the onset, it was an unlikely duo that caught everyone's attention.
Debutant Ed Cowan defied the Indian bowlers and the slight grass on the field to score a battling fifty in a tough first day for the Aussies. On the other side of the ball was Umesh Yadav, who was playing his first Test match abroad after being unused on the South Africa tour in 2010.
Match Report | Scorecard
Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers early on Day 1 of the 1st Test match between India and Australia at Melbourne on Monday.
Though being on the expensive side, Umesh made his presence felt as he removed the dangerous David Warner (37) only in the 13th over of the innings. Within a space of seven deliveries, the paceman halted the Australian charge when he dismissed Shaun Marsh for a duck.
The beauty of the contest was that despite a gripping battle between the two, neither of them convincingly got the better of the other.
Cowan, who had earned his spot courtesy a century in the warm up game against India did justice to his selection as he maintained his composure despite the ball whistling past the helmets.
With the match evenly balanced at the end of Day 1, the two left enough promise to hunt their own glory amongst the array of greats.
