Be afraid of Kumar Sangakkara - Muttiah Muralitharan warned the cricket world a few days into the 2015 World Cup.
"In Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka have the number one one-day batsman in the world at the moment. You can talk all you like about Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers or Glenn Maxwell but Sanga is the man all other sides will fear most of all", Murali said.
He wasn't wrong after all.
Sangakkara has continued to script his incredible farewell from one-day international cricket by becoming the first man in ODI history to score four centuries in as many games. Sangakkara is hungry and right now, he is making a meal out of the opponent bowling attacks in this World Cup. (Sangakkara Creates ODI Record)
He has taken a liking to almost every kind of attacks - he scored an unbeaten 105 against Bangladesh, 117 not out against England, 104 against Australia and on Wednesday, he became the Loch Ness Monster to the Scottish with another 124.
With his effort against Scotland, he left behind - Zaheer Abbas, Saeed Anwar, Herschelle Gibbs, de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and Ross Taylor - all of whom had three consecutive hundreds to their name.
With his unique feat, he also became the first batsman to score four hundreds in a single edition of a World Cup. Previously, Australians Mark Waugh and Matthew Hayden along with India's Sourav Ganguly held the record with three against their name. Interestingly, Sangakkara failed to score even a single hundred in the last two editions he had played in.
Sangakkara has been one of the most prolific batsmen in the last decade and is one of the very few batsmen in cricket history who own the distinction of amassing 10,000-plus runs in both Tests and ODIs.
He is not only the second highest run-getter in ODIs, Sangakkara also sits at fifth spot in the Test matches. The genial Lankan's tally of 25 ODI hundreds is exceeded only by three batsmen -- Sachin Tendulkar (49), Ricky Ponting (30) and Sanath Jayasuriya(28).
Sangakkara arrived on the cricket scene with a blistering 150 against Zimbabwe 'A' back in 2000 and at the age of 22, won his first Man-of-the-Match award in only his second game with a classy 85 against the South Africans.
Then, there was no looking back.
This classy left-hander, along with his dear friend Mahela Jayawardene, has carried Sri Lankan cricket on his broad shoulders and has used his velvet-tipped willow to stamp the authority of the islanders' batting prowess around the world.
Right now, Sangakkara has 63 international hundreds to his credit. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman announced that the World Cup would be his swansong from ODI cricket and he's out there like a man on a mission. He missed winning the World Cup twice. Down Under, he looks determined to take the last two edition's runners-up that one step further.
He did it in the T20 World Cup.
They say one should always end with a bang. Sangakkara is making all the right noises and boy, he is making it loud!
