Live Score - South Africa vs Sri Lanka
IMRAN TAHIR IS ADJUDGED THE MAN OF THE MATCH for his brilliant spell earlier in the day. That's it for the coverage of this game. Join us back tomorrow for the second quarterfinal between India and Bangladesh from the MCG at 0900 IST. Until then, it's goodbye from all of us here!
South Africa have chased this down quite comfortably and are through to the semi-finals. They bowled extremely well and it looked as if they were more determined of the two teams to make it past the quarterfinals. Quinton de Kock got back in form with a good looking 78 off just 57 balls. They now have finally won a knockout game in the World Cup and will await the result of the New Zealand-West Indies clash to see who they play in the semis.
Sri Lanka were just not good on the day. The injuries had jolted them and some last minute changes backfired in the quarterfinal. They have however played some great cricket in this tournament, especially Sangakkara who got 4 back-to-back centuries. A fine innings from Mahela to win the game against Afghanistan and Dilshan thrashing Johnson for 24 off a single over were just the highlights for the Lankan Lions in this campaign. With some seniors retiring, the team will go through transition and will look to come back strong for the next World Cup.
Some brilliant scenes at the SCG as the South Africans give a send off to the two Sri Lankan legends, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene as they walk off the field one last time in Sri Lankan colours. Two legends who have been instrumental in n number of games for Sri Lanka. Cricketing world will surely miss these legends of the game.
