With six needed for win and just one wicket in hand, Kane Williamson (45 not out) hit Pat Cummins for a straight six to seal the victory, to the delight of most of a packed 40,000 crowd at Eden Park, who saw their side almost snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Australia fought back through a career-best six for 28 from Mitchell Starc who almost sealed an unexpected win for the four-times former champions.

Live Score - New Zealand vs Australia
That is all we have for you from this amazing encounter. Tomorrow is another double header. First up at 0300 IST, England will take on Sri Lanka and then at 0830 IST, Zimbabwe take on Pakistan. Till then, it is goodbye!
On a good wicket with short boundaries, one would have expected a run feast. Instead, we witnessed a low-scoring thriller. This is why we love this game. Two great teams and a tremendous game of cricket.
At one stage, it looked like Williamson and Anderson would take the Kiwis home after a steady stand but Australia had other ideas as Maxwell got rid of Anderson and Starc returned with a devastating late spell that almost clinched the game for the Aussies. Williamson held his nerve and finished the game with a biggie putting and exclamation point to a game that had everyone holding their breath.
After that destructive spell from Trent Boult that shot the Aussies out for 151. Then, there was more punishment to follow for the Aussies and Brendon McCullum obliterated the Aussie attack just as he did against England. Then, Johnson smashed one into McCullum's arm and that stalled the blitzkrieg for a moment. Once he fell, Starc turned on the heat with his searing pace and yorkers.
Well that ends a cracking contest! Just what you would expect from these two teams but New Zealand have edged their neighbours today by a solitary wicket. This has been the best game of the tournament by far and both teams deserve a pat on their backs for their performance.
SIX! Williamson finishes it off in style! A fuller ball on middle, Williamson clears his front leg and lofts it delightfully over the long on fence for a biggie that seals the game for the Kiwis. New Zealand win by 1 wicket.
He survives! Full and wide outside off, Boult is calm enough to let it go. What an over from Starc! He has single-handedly brought the Aussies back in the game. 9-0-28-6 are his figures.
Ohhhhh! Full on middle, Boult covers the line and defends it with a dead straight bat.
Trent Boult is the last man in.
OUT! Unbelievable stuff from Starc! Oh my god! Full and swinging in, Southee misses it and the off stump is hit hard. Would you believe it! This is the stuff of dreams. Starc on a hat-trick again.
