The football scholarship that Prince William never took

Prince William, the football star. Such could have been the headlines the world over had the prince and the heir to the British throne accepted an honorary Auburn football scholarship offered to him at birth.

According to the Auburn (United States)Athletics Department magazine Tiger Roar, the then football coach had Pat Dye had sent out a personal invitation in June 1982 for the newly-born William and his parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana, for an honorary football scholarship.

An Alabama newspaper - Press-Register quoted Auburn athletics director David Housel as saying that Dye had had the authority to send out invites for honourary degrees. He also revealed that amongst the files of Dye, it was later discovered, was a 'thank-you' note from the Buckingham palace.

Prince William though opted to go to English private school Eton and St Andrews college where he met his wife Kate Middleton. An avid sportsperson, many have already begun speculating on how life would have been different for the Prince had he actually accepted the offer. For now, neither is William nor his wife seem to be complaining about his decision.
