A brilliant 159-run fourth wicket stand between Virat Kohli (97) and Ajinkya Rahane (81) pulled India out of trouble as the visitors ended Day 1 of the third Test with 307 runs on the board for the loss of six wickets. All-rounder Hardik Pandya (18) got dismissed on the final ball of the day while debutant Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten at stumps. After winning the toss, England skipper Joe Root invited India to bat first on a surface that had plenty of grass on it. The new opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan (35) and KL Rahul (23) provided India with a solid 60-run opening partnership but Chris Woakes cleaned up the top order just before lunch. With 82 for three on board, India were in trouble at lunch but the Indian skipper and his deputy showed brilliant discipline at the centre. The duo batted out the entire second session frustrating the England bowlers. In the final session, when things were looking pretty smooth for India, Rahane got out to Ben Stokes courtesy a blinder from Alastair Cook at first slip. Virat Kohli played a magnificent 97-run knock but got out trying to reach the three-figure mark quickly. For England, it was a hard day's work at office as premier bowler James Anderson and Stuart Broad failed to impress with the ball. Chris Woakes clinched three wickets while James Anderson, Adil Rashid and Ben Stokes managed a wicket each.(SCORECARD)

14:30 IST: Hello and welcome to the live coverage of Day 1 of the third Test at Trent Bridge.
All-rounder Chris Woakes cleaned up the top order as India ended the morning session on Day 1 of the third Test with 82 for three on the scoreboard. Cheteshwar Pujara was the final wicket of the session, who got out after playing a horrible shot in the final over just before lunch. After winning the toss, England skipper Joe Root invited India to bat first on a pitch that had plenty of fresh grass on it. The new opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul provided India with a solid start. Both the openers negotiated the new ball pretty well, frustrating the England pacers. Throughout the most part of the morning session there were plenty of plays and misses but both Indian openers kept their wickets intact. With just about forty minutes to go into lunch, Dhawan was caught fishing outside his off-stump as edged a Chris Woakes delivery to give England their first breakthrough. KL Rahul followed Dhawan soon as he was caught right in front of the stumps. Post the quick dismissals, skipper Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara steadied the Indian ship. In the final over before lunch Pujara played a ridiculous shot handling Woakes and England their third wicket.
India will be hungry to keep themselves alive in the five-match Test series against hosts England when they square-off in the third Test at the Trent Bridge. After losing the first two matches, India face a must-win situation. India gave a very good fight before losing the first Test by 31 runs in Birmingham. In the second Test, they were outplayed by an innings and 159 runs at Lord's, succumbing within three days. The Indian team management's major responsibility on Saturday would be to find a perfect team combination as players are going through fitness and out of form issues. India's playing eleven is likely to witness few changes with Delhi wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant all set to make his Test debut replacing Dinesh Karthik, who has failed miserably so far in the tour, with scores of 0, 20, 1 and 0 in his four innings. Meanwhile, media reports suggest skipper Kohli has more or less recovered from his back problem and is expected to lead his side once again. Also, if opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan returns on Saturday, either Lokesh Rahul or Murali Vijay will be axed from the playing eleven.
Coming to the bowling department, with pacer Jasprit Bumrah having fully recovered from a finger injury and coach Ravi Shastri admitting his side should have dropped chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav at Lord's, the Gujarat right-armer is likely find a place in the team. And with the forecast being a cloudy first four days, it seems difficult for Kuldeep to make a cut because of the seam-friendly condition.
However, with Umesh Yadav, who was dropped at Lord's Test for Kuldeep, the skipper would have to make a choice between him and Bumrah. Pacers Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami, along with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin are guaranteed to feature in the bowling department.
On the other hand, England captain Joe Root on Friday confirmed that all-rounder Ben Stokes will return to the side replacing young seamer Sam Curran.
However, with the pitch condition different from the last time and conditions too, the visitors' first task will be to find a balanced team combination in a do-or-die situation. Play fantasy league and win cash dailyÂ
The conditions did favour the home team this morning and their pacers took no time in picking up the remaining wickets. The score is still a good one and the conditions are still overcast. It is going to be a testing period for the English openers and they would hope to get through this safely. India, on the other hand, will try their best to get some quick wickets before Lunch. Stay tuned.
The England bowling had contrasting stories. They were brilliant when the conditions overhead were cloudy, the first session of Day 1 was an example as Chris Woakes managed to take three quick wickets. However, as the sun came out, the swing was not visible and the bowlers could not produce the same magic. Adil Rashid was expected to deliver but he was not up to the mark, although he bagged the prized scalp of Virat Kohli.
India though will still be happy with their overall batting performance. First, it was Dhawan and Rahul who got them off to a solid start but then three quick wickets had put them on the back foot. Post that, Virat Kohli along with the vice-captain, Ajinkya Rahane, who was in desperate need of runs, came to the fore. The pair added 159 which set the foundation for a big first innings total. The lower order added handy runs but failed to take the total past the 350-run mark.
Boom, boom, boom, that is how England have gone about their business this morning. 22 runs, that's all India have managed to add to their overnight total. Once again it is the duo of Broad and Anderson who have made use of the bowling-friendly conditions and bundled out the remaining wickets in no time.
OUT! Bowled 'em! It's all over for India. England have wrapped up the Indian innings earlier than they would have expected. Anderson fires this outswinger on a length and attacking the stumps. Bumrah tries to block it from the crease. But the slight away movement beats the outside edge of his bat and the ball shatters the stumps. INDIA ALL OUT FOR 329!
Jasprit Bumrah is the next batsman in.
OUT! And the aggressive tactics have not worked for Shami here. Anderson keeps it on a length on middle and off. Shaping away after landing. Shami, as he tried earlier in the over, goes for a wild swing. The ball moves away slightly on hitting the deck and he gets a top edge. The ball flies high in the air and Stuart Broad at mid on takes the skier safely.
Full and attacking the stumps, Shami defends well off the front foot.
Better from Shami. Anderson keeps it on a length around the off stump. Shami gets behind the line of the ball and blocks it out.
Shami swinging with all his might here. Anderson keeps it full just outside off, there is good away shape to the ball. Shami gives it a big swing and misses the ball completely. Is this India's tactics to go after the bowling?
