The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday announced that David Boon, the match referee for the drawn first Test between England and India in Nottingham, has rated the pitch used at Trent Bridge as "poor". Boon submitted his report to the ICC expressing his concerns over the quality of the pitch. (Also read: England skipper Alastair Cook miffed with Trent Bridge pitch after tame draw)
England have been quick to react. In a statement, the England and Wales Cricket Board said: "ECB and Nottinghamshire are already working closely to address the uncharacteristic nature of the pitch for the Test match and ECB pitch inspector Chris Wood and Nottinghamshire groundsman Steve Birks are planning the corrective action."
The ECB added: "It has already been established that the drainage system at Trent Bridge played no part in the unexpected issues that arose around the preparation and performance of the Test Match wicket." The Trent Bridge curator had also apologized for the 'sub-continental' type track.
ICC's General Manager - Cricket, Geoff Allardice, and the ICC's chief match referee, Ranjan Madugalle, will consider all the evidence, including studying video footage of the match, before reaching their decision on whether or not the pitch was poor and if so, if a penalty should be imposed in accordance with ICC's Pitch Monitoring Process.
The Trent Bridge Test was played from July 9 to 13 July in which India scored 457 and 391-9 declared, while England scored 496 in their only innings. English players, particularly Man of the Match James Anderson, slammed the slow and low nature of the wicket.
The Lord's pitch, where the second Test is under way, is a typically English wicket. With a greenish tinge, the wicket has plenty for the quick bowlers.
