In his micro blogging handle, Tendulkar told Kohli that he "wanted to play." In response, Kohli said, "Not sure you have what it takes." Some good banter or real intent? The flurry of responses to the tweets have ranged from confusion, ecstasy, support for Tendulkar, Kohli bashing, happiness and a touch of cynicism. Ever since Tendulkar retired in November 2013, he has kept himself busy in several other sporting ventures. He is the co-owner of the Kerala Blasters Football team in the Indian Super League. He has been seen in several Indian and international sporting events during this period.
Tendulkar wants to play! This tweet has come at an interesting time for Kohli as well. This week, Kohli became the co-owner of the Dubai-based UAE Royals franchise in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL). It is a team that also features world No. 2 and 17-time Grand Slam winner, Roger Federer.
It is a well-documented fact that Tendulkar and Federer know each other very well. Tendulkar is a regular visitor to Wimbledon and he has always met Federer. It is well-documented that both superstars are in awe of each other.
Does Tendulkar have the desire to play alongside Federer in the UAE team? That could have been one of the reasons for this tweet. The sight of both Federer and Tendulkar on the tennis court, playing together or against each other, would be a mouth-watering prospect for millions of Indian sports fans.
In a remote prospect, this tweet could also be related to the Masters Champions League that is slated to be held in the UAE in February 2016.
Tendulkar, along with the likes of Brian Lara, Wasim Akram, Adam Gilchrist and Jacques Kallis will feature in this T20 tournament as icon players. This tournament might see the return of Tendulkar back on the cricket field.
In the age of commercialization, when sidelights often pale into insignificance the main course, something is surely cooking between Tendulkar and Indian cricket's pin-up boy, Kohli.
