From the land of Brian Lara has emerged a 23-year-old who has smashed the fastest hundred in T20 cricket. His name itself is explosive. His 21-ball century in a T20 match organized by Tobago Cricket Association surely was. Iraq Thomas has blasted Chris Gayle out of the record books.
ÂÂ
Iraq Thomas has been making headlines since he scored a 31-ball 131 on Sunday. He was playing for Scarborough/Mason Hall United in a match organized by Tobago Cricket Association at Louis D'Or.
ÂÂ
Chasing Speyside's target of 152, Thomas bludgeoned 131 off 31 balls to finish off the contest in just eight overs. Thomas hit 15 sixes and five fours in his hurricane innings that put to shade Gayle's 30-ball century for Royal Challengers Bangalore in a 2013 Indian Premier League match against now defunct Pune Warriors India owned by the Sahara group.
ÂÂ
"I never thought I would get the runs as quickly as I did but after hitting a few, I realised that something special can happen out there and it came through," Thomas told the local Trinidad media. A 53-ball 97 was Thomas' previous best knock.
ÂÂ
The record for the fastest Test century is held by former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum. He smashed a hundred off 54 balls against Australia earlier this year.
ÂÂ
South Africa's AB de Villiers holds the record for the quickest century in ODIs. He took 31 balls to score a century against the West Indies in 2015. Now Iraq Thomas has beaten them all to create a piece of history.
