AUS v ENG 3rd Test Live
Welcome back for England's response with the bat. The Australian players spread out and take their fielding positions. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett are out to open for England. Mitchell Starc has the new ball and is raring to go. Three slips and a gully for Crawley. Here we go...
... SECOND INNINGS ...
Even after getting both Carey and Khawaja dismissed, the struggles didn't end for England as the Australian tail wagged and how. Cummins, Starc, Boland and Lyon all made crucial contributions down the order. The last 4 wickets added 100 runs for Australia, which shows how good a batting pitch this actually is. A fair criticism of England's bowling was that they didn't attack the stumps consistently, and their short-ball ploy gave underwhelming returns as well. Starc notched up a fluent fifty, which just added another layer of frustration in the English camp. A lot will depend on how England bat on a belter of a wicket. The template in the first inning was the way Australia bounced back after a wicket, and constructed partnerships. Back in a bit for the second innings.
Adelaide has always been a good batting venue and the average first innings score here is 393. And according to Mark Waugh on air, it is an average score, but one cannot conclude how good the score is until both sides have batted on the same surface. Australia started off really nicely with Weatherald and Head but with both openers dismissed in a quick span of time, they needed a rebuilding phase, which came through Usman Khawaja, their make-shift number 4 in the absence of Steve Smith. His 82, and Alex Carey's fine 106 frustrated England as they both were the chief engineers in rescuing Australia from 94/4, with a 91-run partnership.
A well-deserved five-wicket haul for Jofra Archer and finally, after a frustrating forty minutes into Day 2, England have managed to clean up the Australian tail. The hosts finished the opening day being 8 down on 326, and coming into the second day, they have added 45 runs to their overnight score, in just 8.2 overs. Archer looked the most effective bowler for England, his pace was good, and he bowled with conviction as well. He raises the ball to acknowledge the crowd cheering for him as the English players walk to the dressing room to prepare for their batting.
OUT! LBW! Jofra Archer gets a fifer, or does he? He has to wait as Nathan Lyon takes the review here. YES, he does. This is his third five-wicket haul against the Aussies. He goes just a bit fuller and on off, gets it to nip back in. Lyon tries to play with a straight bat again and from the crease, but the ball goes past the inside edge to hit him on the back pad. There is a big appeal for LBW, and the finger goes up. Snicko confirms no bat involved, and Ball Tracking shows two reds and wickets on umpire's call with the ball hitting the top of the middle stump. Australia have been bowled out for 371.
Good length and on off, Nathan Lyon blocks it out with a straight bat and holds the pose as well.
Length again and on off, Scott Boland keeps it out to the off side.
Hits the length hard and just around off, Scott Boland steers it towards point.
Play and a miss! Short of a length and outside off, Scott Boland looks to cut it away but misses.
Back of a length and outside off, Nathan Lyon cuts it away to deep point for a single.
Fuller and on off, Nathan Lyon drives it firmly but straight to mid off.
On a length and around off, Nathan Lyon looks to push it away but gets an inside edge towards square leg.
As has been the case in this Test so far, barring Archer, the bowling from the rest has been strictly ordinary. They haven't targeted the stumps much and have been all over the place. And this morning, except for Starc getting bowled, barely any delivery has finished on the stumps. Aiming the sticks or the pads is so crucial and effective, especially when bowling to the tailenders. Josh Tongue has looked like the second-most effective bowler in terms of hitting consistent lines and lengths. And... here he comes into the attack, replacing Brydon Carse. 15-1-63-1 are Tongue's bowling figures.
Fuller in length and on middle, angling in, Scott Boland safely negotiates it down the pitch.
Hits the length hard and on middle and leg. Nathan Lyon misses his flick as the ball goes off his pads towards fine leg. A leg bye taken.
Short of a length and on off, Nathan Lyon dabs it down towards gully and shouts a loud 'Nooo' to deny the run.
Bangs in a bouncer now, on middle, Nathan Lyon ducks under it.
FOUR! The runs continue to flow here! Short of a length and just outside off. Nathan Lyon lets the ball come to him. He hops up to ride the bounce and guides it away through point for a boundary.
Good-length delivery, on off, Nathan Lyon gets a bit squared up but manages to pat it towards short cover.
