David Warner | 30 | 72 | 6 | 0 | 41.66 |
c Zak Crawley b Stuart Broad
21 OUT! TAKEN! Straight to the man! Finally, Warner departs and it is none other than Broad to take the first wicket. It took a lot longer than they would have liked but this wicket provides them with an opportunity to put some pressure on the Aussies. Broad bowls a length ball, in the corridor of uncertainty. Warner pushes at it but the ball tails away late and takes the outside edge. The ball goes to second slip and Zak Crawley pouches it. 51/1
Marcus Harris | 38 | 109 | 4 | 0 | 34.86 |
c Joe Root b James Anderson
39.1 OUT! CAUGHT! Keeping James Anderson on for a longer spell has worked. Good-length ball, on off and this is angled across the left-hander. Marcus Harris is caught on the crease as he goes neither on the back foot or on the front foot. The ball goes off the outside edge as Harris looks to push at it and goes straight towards first slip. Joe Root makes no mistake and the Nelson superstition proves unlucky for the Aussies. Harris has to depart after setting himself up for a big innings, he will be disappointed with that. 111/2
Marnus Labuschagne | 28 | 59 | 4 | 0 | 47.45 |
c Jos Buttler b Mark Wood
40.2 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Inspired move from Joe Root to get Mark Wood into the attack. Wood hits the length hard and angles it into off stump. The ball just straightens a bit after pitching and that is enough to get the edge. Marnus Labuschagne is on the back foot and looks to block it out but gets undone by the ball holding its line. The ball goes off the outside edge and Jos Buttler makes no mistake behind the stumps. The floodgates are certainly open now for England but can they take advantage? Usman Khawaja is in at number 5. 117/3
Steven Smith | 67 | 141 | 5 | 0 | 47.51 |
c Jos Buttler b Stuart Broad
84 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Stuart Broad has the last laugh and England have the breakthrough they were so desperately looking for. Stuart Broad bowls a length ball, outside off and this is angled in. Just like a couple of deliveries earlier, the ball straightens after pitching. Steven Smith shuffles a bit and is caught on the crease. He is completely undone by the away movement and this time ends up edging it. Jos Buttler dives down to his right and takes a fine catch. The partnership is broken and can England now capitalize? 232/4
Usman Khawaja | 137 | 260 | 13 | 0 | 52.69 |
b Stuart Broad
131.5 OUT! BOWLED! A 5-wicket haul for Broad! He has bowled really well and deserves this. Would be fair to say that he is probably the only one who has looked like he would take wickets here. But what a knock by Usman Khawaja. A sensational ton that has put his team well on top now. Not easy to score runs rightaway after coming back in the side after a big gap but he has delivered for his team. He bowls it full, on off. Khawaja looks to punch it away but his feet are a bit lazy on this one. It takes the inside edge and the ball crashes into the stumps. He walks off to a well-deserved standing ovation from his home crowd. 398/8
Cameron Green | 5 | 14 | 1 | 0 | 35.71 |
c Zak Crawley b Stuart Broad
87.4 OUT! TAKEN! Gone this time and Stuart Broad has brought England right back in the game! He serves a length ball, around off. Green does not reach the pitch of the ball and goes out with his hands looking to block that one. There is a hint of shape and he gets the outside edge. This time the ball carries and Zak Crawley takes a good low catch at third slip. This is more headache to the Aussie selectors. Cameron Green is an allrounder but cannot score with the bat these days. That raises the question - should someone like Mitchell Marsh, who is in the form of his life, be ignored? But then, Green is bowling tremendously and holding onto his place. Possibly another question then - why not make Carey bat above him? 242/5
Alex Carey Wk | 13 | 39 | 2 | 0 | 33.33 |
c Jonny Bairstow b Joe Root
102.3 OUT! TAKEN! Joe Root with the golden arm. This is a huge wicket for England as it exposes the tail of the Australian batting lineup. Nicely tossed up, around off. Alex Carey looks to slog it over the mid-wicket fence, against the turn and ends up giving his wicket away. The ball goes off the top edge and is skied towards the mid on region. The fielder, Jonny Bairstow runs behind from mid-wicket and slides in to take a fine catch. Can England now run through the Australian lower order? 285/6
Pat Cummins C | 24 | 47 | 4 | 0 | 51.06 |
c Jos Buttler b Stuart Broad
113.5 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Stuart Broad has been bending his back in this over and does get his man in the end. Broad bangs in another short ball and it's just perfect. The ball is short enough to trouble the batter and is right at the body. Pat Cummins is taken aback by the steep bounce and tries to get out of the way but there's not much time for that. Jos Buttler leaps high once again and takes it well over his head. The visitors think the ball came off the glove but the umpire shakes his head. It is reviewed and UltraEdge shows that the ball just flicked the glove and the decision is reversed. Pat Cummins has to depart but he has done a decent job. 331/7

b Mitchell Starc
9.2 OUT! BOWLED! Luck favors Starc this time! He bowls a full one, on off. This one shapes back in a bit. Hameed once again goes for the straight drive without much feet movement. That leaves a big gap between the bat and the pads. That is more than enough for the ball to sneak through and castle the middle stump! Hameed's poor run in the Ashes continues. 22/1
Zak Crawley | 18 | 55 | 2 | 0 | 32.72 |
b Scott Boland
17 OUT! TIMBER! Both the openers are gone! What a delivery from Scott Boland! This one lands on off and nips back in sharply. Zak Crawley is committed to his drive but gets beaten on the inside edge and the ball disturbs the stumps. Another sloppy start for the openers of England. Boland's dream start to Test cricket continues. 36/2
Dawid Malan | 3 | 39 | 0 | 0 | 7.69 |
c Usman Khawaja b Cameron Green
21.5 OUT! TAKEN! This is a trap from Australia! What a session for the hosts! They have both the big wickets before the morning session and Australia will enjoy the Lunch more. A length ball, angling on middle and leg. Malan shuffles and tries to flick it away. It goes more of the inside edge towards leg slip where Usman Khawaja makes a full-length dive forward and takes a sharp catch. That will be Lunch on Day 3. 36/4
Joe Root C | 7 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Steven Smith b Scott Boland
20.1 OUT! EDGE AND GONE! Australia get the big wicket of Root at the brink of the Lunch break! A duck for Root on today's menu as well. This is on a length and way outside off. The pressure building up over the last few overs gets to Root. He goes for the cut shot but manages an outside edge to second slip where Steven Smith catches it very high. He ain't dropping those. Scott Boland living his life at the moment. 36/3
Ben Stokes | 66 | 91 | 9 | 1 | 72.52 |
lbw b Nathan Lyon
51 OUT! LBW! Stokes knew as soon as it hit! He kept his head down and started walking straight to the dressing room! A flatter ball, angling on middle, this one skids through. Ben Stokes was deep in his crease and he tried to flick but misses and got rapped front on the pads. Lyon turned to appeal and the umpire had already raised his finger. A wonderful innings from Ben Stokes comes to an end. Helped his team to get in a good position. A relief for Nathan Lyon, he was going for runs but this will give him some boost. Good piece of bowling too. He fires it in, did not try to spin it at all, and beat Stokes with the pace. 164/5
Jonny Bairstow | 113 | 158 | 8 | 3 | 71.51 |
c Alex Carey b Scott Boland
77.5 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Boland gets the wicket of Bairstow and that ends a fine, fine knock from him. He walks off to a standing ovation and well-deserved. Single-handedly has taken England to the position they are in. A good delivery by Boland. On a length and around off, this one lands and holds its line. Bairstow looks to defend but it takes the outside edge and the keeper does the rest. Can Australia keep England under 300 now? 289/9
Jos Buttler Wk | 8 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Usman Khawaja b Pat Cummins
53.3 OUT! TAKEN! The skipper does it and Khawaja with a brilliant catch! Soft dismissal though and Buttler goes back on a duck! A length ball, on off. Jos Buttler is too early as he tries to block it. The ball tends to stick a bit and he chips it straight to short cover where Usman Khawaja holds onto it. A string of low scores for Jos Buttler. 173/6
Mark Wood | 39 | 41 | 2 | 3 | 95.12 |
c Nathan Lyon b Pat Cummins
65.3 OUT! CAUGHT! Australia finally get the 7th wicket And this always seemed coming, with Australia bowling a barricade of bouncers to Wood. A short ball, around off, coming in, Mark Wood instantaneously went for the hook. Now, he missed and the ball went off something to point, where an easy catch was taken. Now, Australia appealed but the umpire did not give it. Cummins immediately went for the review and Wood meanwhile, called for the physio, for a concussion test. The replays showed that the ball hit the helmet and went to point. Wood was very confident that he do not hit that. However, UltraEdge showed a spike when the ball went past the glove and then off the helmet to point. So the onfield decision got overruled and Wood looked surprised. The catch was taken by Lyon, by the way and the 72-run stand is broken. 245/7
Jack Leach | 10 | 29 | 2 | 0 | 34.48 |
c Pat Cummins b Nathan Lyon
72.5 OUT! TAKEN! What did Leach just do there? That was rash! Bairstow will not be happy. He is working so hard and Leach has just gifted his wicket to Lyon. Clever from Lyon. He slows it up and bowls it outside off. The slog sweep is out. This one turns away and hence, it induces a top edge. It goes up in the air towards mid on where Cummins takes it. Still another 150 runs away are England. Just the two wickets left. 266/8
Stuart Broad | 15 | 19 | 1 | 0 | 78.94 |
c Alex Carey b Scott Boland
79.1 OUT! TAKEN! The England innings comes to an end! This is short and on middle, Broad looks to pull, it goes off the top edge towards the leg side. Carey runs to that direction and takes it nicely. ENGLAND HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 294! 294/10

18.1 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Just on the brink of Lunch, England get the wicket! A flighted ball, way outside off. Tempts Harris to go for a drive but the ball just turns a bit and that takes the outside edge to the keeper, Ollie Pope, the substitute, takes it nicely. 52/2
David Warner | 3 | 18 | 0 | 0 | 16.66 |
c sub Ollie Pope b Mark Wood
6 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! There is the opening wicket and the move to get on Wood and the move to change to over the wicket proves to be a master stroke. Always a better angle when there is not a lot of movement on offer. The angle across the batter does the trick. All this while, the ball was angling in which was not causing a lot of problems to Warner. He probably was a little too use to it. This time Wood, lands it on off and slants it away. Warner has a poke at it, he pokes at a delivery he could have probably left. It goes off the outside edge and Pope does the rest. Early wicket, just what England wanted. They need a couple more to put Australia under a little pressure. Replays also show that Warner just did not move his front foot towards the delivery. He played it quite away from his body. Maybe Warner was sitting back, waiting for another back of a length ball. Good change there by Wood. 12/1

21.4 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Well, not a bad start, aye? First over after the break and England get Labuschagne. A short ball, extra bounce as well, outside off. Marnus Labuschagne gets on his toes and has a poke at it but only manages to get an outside edge. Ollie Pope, the substitute keeper, pouches it comfortably. Labuschagne just stands there initially but then starts walking off, after the umpire raises his finger. Smith asks his disciple whether he nicked it and the reply is a nod of the head. While walking off, Marnus shows some more Smith mannerisms, indicating to himself that he got out due to extra bounce. Australia are effectively 190/3. Curiously, Wood has now got Labuschagne 3 times in 3 innings in this series, conceding just 17 runs in 52 balls against him. 68/3

29 OUT! BOWLED! Jack Leach gets into the attack and gets the big fish. A flatter ball, this one lands around off and skids through the surface, it even stays low than what Smith expected. Steven Smith stays back and looks to cut but the ball doesn't bounce much and rattles the stumps. Australia 4 down now. 86/4

68.5 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Just as Alex Carey started to walk off, Cummins signaled his batters to come back. A flatter ball, angling into the left-hander, on middle. Alex Carey looks to sweep but gets an inside edge onto the pads. The ball lobs and goes to Ollie Pope who dives to his right and does well to hold onto it. England appeal but the umpire is not yet convinced and tells them to wait but Carey started to walk off and Australia declare their innings and now England need 388 runs to win. Usman Khawaja stays unbeaten on 101. 265/6

33 OUT! LBW! And, out of nowhere, Green produces a corker of a yorker! Nicely done by him. He pushes Crawley back in his crease and then fires in the perfect yorker. Right on the middle pole. Zak Crawley looks to get his bat down in time but fails to do so. The ball hits him low on the pads and the umpire raises the finger right away. That looks plumb but Zak Crawley has a word with Root and then decides to review it. It looks like a review taken in hope. The TV umpire checks Hotspot and UltraEdge but finds no evidence of any bat on it. Then comes the Ball Tracker, impact in line and it is hitting the middle of the middle stump! Zak Crawley walks back to the hut after what has been a brilliant knock by him. A delight to watch and cover this knock by the young lad. 96/3

Haseeb Hameed | 9 | 58 | 0 | 0 | 15.51 |
c Alex Carey b Scott Boland
19.2 OUT! TAKEN! This time Carey takes it! He redeems himself! Ruthless Boland provides Australia with the first wicket to get them started. The best opening stand for England in the series comes to an end. They looked together so far but Hameed has to depart now. Boland yet again hurls a length ball, right on the off pole. As we have seen many times in the series, Hameed looks to block it from the crease with his feet glued to the crease. The away movement takes the outside edge. Carey dives to his right now and takes it nicely. Australia have the opening now and would be ruthless. 46/1
Dawid Malan | 4 | 29 | 0 | 0 | 13.79 |
b Nathan Lyon
27.5 OUT! BOWLED! This one skids through and shatters the off stump! A natural variation from Lyon that goes straight on with the arm. He bowls this on off and quicker in pace. Malan stays on the back foot and looks to play it square on the off side but misses. The ball shatters the off pole and Dawid Malan departs. Australia get the second wicket just at the stroke of Drinks and they will be looking to capitalise on it now. England have started cautiously and they will hope that they can go to Lunch without further damage, 74/2

Joe Root C | 24 | 85 | 3 | 0 | 28.23 |
c Alex Carey b Scott Boland
58.1 OUT! TAKEN! The dream continues for Scott Boland in Test cricket! He must be over the moon currently! That is the big wicket of Root and Australia are delighted now. Boland bowls a length ball, around the fifth-stump channel. Root puts in half a stride to block it. But the ball moves away just enough to get the faintest outside edge! Carey does the rest and Root is disappointed. He cannot believe it and he stays in that position for a couple of seconds after playing that shot. 156/4
Ben Stokes | 60 | 123 | 10 | 1 | 48.78 |
c Steven Smith b Nathan Lyon
74.4 OUT! TAKEN! GONE! Lyon does it! Stokes is furious with himself and he cannot believe what has just happened! He thinks about slamming his bat on the ground for a brief moment. This is good bowling by Lyon. A bit of drift, a bit flatter, on off. Stokes stays in the crease looking to block it out but Lyon gets a bit of turn and gets the outside edge. The ball goes to Steven Smith at first slip. He fumbles a bit but manages to hold on! Australia needed to break this partnership and they have finally broken through before the second new ball. 193/5

Jonny Bairstow | 41 | 105 | 3 | 0 | 39.04 |
c Marnus Labuschagne b Scott Boland
91.2 OUT! TAKEN! GONE! That should seal the Test for Australia! Length ball, lands way outside off but it snakes back in. Bairstow wants to block it from the crease but gets the inside edge on the pads. The ball pops up to Marnus Labuschagne at silly point and he takes a sharp catch! He surely heard the edge this time and one can hear the cheers getting louder. Just two wickets away Australia now and new ball has done the trick for them. 237/8

lbw b Pat Cummins
84.4 OUT! LBW! GONE! First wicket for Pat Cummins in this innings and what a time to strike! He bowls a fiery yorker, on middle. Buttler looks to flick it away but the bat hits the left boot and the ball goes onto hit the back pad! There is a big appeal but the umpire is unmoved. The review is taken by Cummins. UltraEdge shows a spike but that is of the bat hitting the boot. Ball Tracker rolls up and it has three reds! Mark Wood is the new man in. 218/6

85 OUT! LBW! That is as plumb as it gets! A yorker, on off. Wood fails to get his bat down in time and gets hit on the boot. That has hurt him but there is a big appeal and the finger goes up right away. Wood has a word with Bairstow and he knows that he is likely out but the review is taken with a second left on the clock. The replays roll in. No bat on that and the ball is hitting the stumps! This over has changed the game and Australia can smell the victory. 218/7

100 OUT! TAKENNNNN! SMITH HAS DONE IT! He tosses it well, around off. Leach has to play at it. But the ball takes the outside edge. It goes towards first slip after taking a small deflection off Carey's gloves and David Warner takes a good low catch to his right. First wicket for Smith in 6 years and what a time to get it! He is surrounded by his teammates! Jack Leach who played so well so far has to walk back now, disappointed. This is getting quite intense and exciting here. Test cricket at it's best! 270/9
