Kohli has scored a fifty in India's second warm-up match
For Virat Kohli, the West Indies are not a happy hunting ground. India's young Test captain toured the Caribbean in 2011 and returned poor numbers, averaging just 15.20 in five innings. This time, the script can be entirely different.
Kohli has had a fantastic year so far. Although he has strode like a colossus in the shorter formats of the game, Kohli's ability to adjust to conditions and challenge himself at every opportunity will make him a thorn in the flesh of West Indian bowlers.
That he is hungry to perform and lead by example was eloquently clear during the second warm-up match at Warner Park in St Kitts. After scoring just 14 runs in the first practice game, Kohli scored 51 in the second match. He batted for over two hours and faced 96 balls, a good outing for a No. 5 batsman.
In the first Test starting in Antigua on Thursday, Kohli is expected to bat at No. 4. In a team where there are youngsters like Lokesh Rahul already showing their hunger for runs, Kohli will be eager to stamp his class both as a batsman and leader.
His numbers against West Indies are unimpressive. In 2011, when Kohli last played in the West Indies, he had scores of 4, 15, 0, 27 and 30. He has an overall average of 27.88 against the Caribbeans and a poor 15.20 in the West Indies.
For a man who has scored 11 Test hundreds in 41 matches, Kohli hasn't scored a century against West Indies in six Tests. Kohli's Test average of 27.88 is only better than his average against England (20.12) and Bangladesh (14).
Kohli will be eager to break this West Indian jinx as India seek to score their third consecutive series win in the Caribbean islands.
