US Open: Somdev Devvarman beats Robby Ginepri to reach final round of qualifiers
Somdev, ranked 113th in the world, will now take on Great Britain's James Ward in the Round of 32, in a bid to seal a spot in the main men's singles event.
India's Somdev Devvarman is one step away from sealing a berth in the US Open main draw after he beat Robby Ginepri in the second round of the qualifiers on Thursday. Somdev, seeded sixth in the qualifying tournament, scored a hard fought 7-6 2-6 6-2 win over American Ginepri.
Somdev, ranked 113th in the world, will now take on Great Britain's James Ward in the final round, in a bid to seal a spot in the men's singles event.
In a topsy-turvy 2-hour 9-minute battle against the 2005 US Open semi-finalist on Thursday, Somdev hammered 8 aces as compared to Ginepri's 5. Although Ginepri dominated the match with a whopping 42 winners as compared to Somdev's 27, the 252-ranked local player's 44 unforced errors went against him.
Somdev has played the US Open four times and his best performance in the year's final Grand Slam was when he reached the second round in the men's singles event in 2009.
