The 2013 US Open will not be Mahesh Bhupathi's last Grand Slam afterall. The doubles veteran, who had announced last year that 2013 was going to be his final year on the international circuit, has changed his mind. The 12-time Grand Slam champion has confirmed the news to NDTV from New York. Bhupathi made first round exits from both the doubles and mixed doubles events at the 2013 US Open.
In the men's doubles event, Bhupathi and Philipp Petzschner lost in straight sets to Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil. Bhupathi, who was playing the Mixed Doubles with comeback queen Martina Hingis, lost to Yung-Jan Chan and Robert Lindstedt 6-7, 6-7. The Indo-Swiss pair had won the 2006 Australian Open together.
Bhupathi has played the 2013 season with a number of partners, including compatriot Rohan Bopanna. Bhupathi had said that playing alongside good friend Bopanna would be an ideal way to bid adieu to the sport.
