In a three-set thriller, eighth seed Jennifer Capriati defeated third seed Serena Williams, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of the US Open. She will now meet No. 6 Elena Dementieva, who eliminated No. 2 seed Amelie Mauresmo 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. Germany's Tommy Haas also advanced to his first US Open quarterfinal with a straight sets victory over Tomas Berdych. The unseeded German will next meet fourth seed Lleyton Hewitt in the last eight. Hewitt, the 2001 US Open champion, scored a straight-sets victory over Karol Beck. Big-serving Swede Joachim Johansson also blasted into the quarterfinals with a 6-2 6-3 6-2 defeat of Frenchman Michael Llodra.
