Chasing 154, CSK got off to a great start with Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad adding 62 in the first seven overs. KXIP got du Plessis for 48 in the 10th over but CSK were well-placed to chase the total down at all stages. Gaikwad got another 50 this season – his third consecutive fifty of IPL 2020 – as CSK raced towards the target and reached there with seven balls to spare. Gaikwad finished unbeaten on 62 runs off 49 balls. This CSK victory means KXIP have been knocked out of the race to the playoffs. Earlier, CSK won the toss and elected to field. Mayank scored a brisk 26 off just 15 balls before Ngidi shattered his stumps. Rahul followed soon after, bowled by Ngidi, again, for 29. Shardul Thakur reaped rewards for four quiet overs after the Powerplay as Nicholas Pooran inside-edged behind to the keeper Dhoni. Imran Tahir then trapped Chris Gayle lbw to put CSK on top. Mandeep Singh and Deepak Hooda hung around for a while and Hooda's unbeaten 62 off just 30 balls took KXIP to 153/6.(SCORECARD)
IPL 2020 Match 53Â Highlights Between Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI Punjab, From Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
An emphatic victory for CSK sealed with a single by Rayudu.
This victory means that KXIP have been knocked out of the race to the playoffs. Heartbreak for KXIP here, as they fought their way back in the tournament after finding themselves at the bottom of the table in the first half.
Both CSK and KXIP will not qualify for playoffs and their IPL 2020 campaigns are effectively over.
A nasty bouncer there by Shami to Gaikwad. The ball got big on the batsman and Gaikwad could only manage a top edge on that. The ball flew over the 'keeper's head for four.
The next short ball by Shami is thumped emphatically over cow corner for four.
Fortune favours the brave. CSK only seven runs away.
Gaikwad is is great touch. Bishnoi over pitches and Gaikwad gets to the pitch of the ball and plays this ball over the covers for another four. He extinguishing the last flickers of hope for KXIP this season.
KL Rahul fails to grab a tough chance behind the wickets. A short ball by M Ashwin and Rayudu tries to cut that fiercely. He only manages an outside edge to it and the ball thuds into Rahul's gloves before popping out.
The KXIP leg spinners have bowled too short in this inning and the CSK batsmen have been happy to play square of the wicket. More importantly, CSK have lost only one wicket and the run rate has been kept in check.
This was a bad ball, pitched way too wide outside off, as Rayudu walks across his stumps towards the off side and cuts in the gap between point and third man for four.
Five runs come in Shami's third over – CSK 89/1 after 11 overs
Shami was brought back by Rahul after the wicket of Faf du Plessis. However, he returns wicket-less yet again even as Ambati Rayudu, the new batsman, gets off the mark.
Finally, KXIP have a wicket. Du Plessis got too cute with that one, trying to ramp it yet again over fine leg, but doesn't get the connection right.
Rahul runs to his left and takes a simple catch at short fine leg.
He appeals to the third umpire after taking the catch, perhaps to show his displeasure at an earlier decision where a catch taken by Mandeep off Gaikwad was overturned by the third umpire.
Inside-out and over the covers. That's a shot and a pose for the photographs.
The ball was pitched up by Jordan and du Plessis played an extended cover drive that took the ball over the infield and towards the vacant deep extra cover region for four.
CSk are scoring at 8 runs per over. That's more than enough to chase this total down. KXIP need a flurry of wickets. Failing to get any is frustrating the players.
Some pressure was being built in the last two overs and that has told on young Gaikwad. The ball was pitched up and Gaikwad took the invitation to hit this leg-break square on the off-side, where Mandeep Singh, at short point, dived forward to grab the ball. Kings XI appealed and the on-field umpires referred it upstairs.
The ball, however, had bounced just before Mandeep got his hands to it. Not out.
Bishnoi is greeted into the attack with an exquisite cover drive for four by du Plessis. This is followed by an uppish drive that sails over the extra cover fence for six.
CSK are making a quick work of the target at the moment.
Shami overpitches this one outside off and Gaikwad carresses it through the covers for four. He presented the full face of the bat and just timed the ball. Away it went to the fence.
Faf walks across his stumps and ends up outside off. He the ramps this ball, by a fast bowler, over fine leg for six. It carried magnificently and landed way beyond the fine leg fence.
This is a good start for CSK. KXIP need wickets and they need them now. Remember, CSK are out of the race to playoffs but KXIP are still in with a sliver of a chance if they win this contest.
Gaikwad gets going as well. He comes dancing down the wicket, making Jordan to drop his length short, and then pulls the ball over mid-wicket for a six.
Ngidi bowls the final over. He bowls one full outside off and Hooda walks across his crease, stands on off stump and heaves this one over mid-off and beat the man in the deep.
Hooda is hitting a few in the death overs. This ball was full again, in fact, a half-volley outside off stump. Hooda takes a big stride forward and drives this ball uppishly over covers for a six.
