IPL 2013: Mudgal panel seeks information on tainted Gurunath Meiyappan

The Supreme Court appointed three-member committee, headed by former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and comprising Additional Solicitor General L Nageshwar Rao and senior advocate Niloy Dutta, has started its probe into allegations of corruption in the 2013 Indian Premier League. The Mudgal committee had its first meeting on October 11 and has charted its course of action, according to a Board of Control for Cricket in India press release on Thursday. The committee has called on people having any information on the allegations of betting against Board of Control for Cricket in India president N. Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and other accused to share their inputs with the panel.

The Mudgal committee has four months to submits its report to the Supreme Court and also recommend ways to erase corruption in the IPL. Since the apex court has directed the BCCI to extend cooperation, former Chennai Super Kings team principal Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra will be called for questioning by the probe panel.

The committee was constituted on October 8 by a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices A K Patnaik and J S Kehar after the Cricket Association of Bihar challenged a BCCI-appointed probe panel report that cleared Meiyappan and Kundra of corruption charges during IPL 201. Meiyappan has also been chargesheeted by the Mumbai Police.

Justice Mudgal has assured that the probe into the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal would not be an eyewash. The justice reminded that the probe has been constituted by the apex court and not BCCI. The "cricket loving" justice also hinted that if the need arise the committee can question anybody in the BCCI.
