After being put in to bat, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a bad start as they lost their skipper Gautam Gambhir in the third over of the innings courtesy a brilliant run-out from Shadab Jakati. Out of nowhere, Gujarat Lions captain Suresh Raina handed over the ball to part-time seamer Dwayne Smith and he picked up his career best of 4/8 to strangle the tourists to 124/8. In reply, Raina steered the chase for the hosts with his unbeaten 53 off 36 balls and as a result, the Lions won the match with 39 balls to spare and jumped to second spot in 2016 Indian Premier League standings. Kanpur's Green Park could not have asked for a better T20 match to establish itself on India's T20 map. Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders will go all out to secure those two crucial points as IPL's league stage hits home stretch.
The GL vs KKR match could be a battle between batsmen on either side. Suresh Raina's return from paternity leave will boost Gujarat Lions top order that flaunts big bitters like Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith and Aaron Finch.
KKR will rely on their skipper Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa to give them a good start. Yusuf Pathan and Manish Pandey's form in the middle will be crucial especially at a time when KKR will miss their productive all-rounder Andre Russell due to injury.
For the record, Gujarat Lions had beaten Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets when they met at Eden Gardens on May 8. KKR suffered due to a batting collapse (22/4). Set to chase 159, Dinesh Karthik's 51 got the Lions home quite comfortably.
