There was a time when Yuvraj Singh would find a place on anyone's top-five all-rounders' list. A lot though has changed over the last four years. The Man of the Tournament of the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup is now trying to use the IPL as a platform to make a comeback to the national team. The question is - do the Delhi Daredevils have the right strategy for Yuvi, not just to help him showcase his talent, but also to help resurrect a team that has finished as wooden-spoon holders for two seasons in a row? NDTV's IPL expert and former Australia cricketer Dean Jones doesn't think so. (Match Highlights | Report | Pics)
Jones told NDTV, "Delhi have to bat Yuvraj in the top order. He's nowhere near where he used to be, come and smash it right from the get go. He needs to bat in the top order, with Duminy batting around about 6. If they had changed their batting order, they might have won that game and confidence in this game is everything." The game Jones is referring to is Delhi Daredevils' one-run loss to Chennai Super Kings in their season opener on Thursday. Delhi were chasing 151 to win and finished with 149. The man who almost took Delhi across the finish line was Albie Morkel. The man most Indian cricket fans would have liked to see play a similar role was Yuvraj, but he only came in to bat at number 6. When Yuvi came in to bat, Delhi still needed 64 runs to win in 6.1 overs, the required run rate was almost 10. Yuvraj, making his debut for Delhi in the IPL, managed to make just 9 off 6 balls. The debut was a forgettable one. (CSK Rule Twitter)
