How barring Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals would have hit Indian Premier League

Supreme Court's strict observation on malpractices in Indian cricket Thursday and to propose barring Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from Indian Premier League 7 had sent shivers down many spines. Although the two teams have now been allowed to participate, a bar would have had an enormous impact on the popular domestic T20 league - starting April 16. Here are the top possible fallouts of having an IPL minus CSK and RR:

1)    The Indian Premier League has eight teams. Barring two teams would reduce the total number to six which means the number of total matches would come down from 60 to 34 - a drop of 45 per cent.

2)    It is believed that the IPL generates a total revenue of close to USD 3.2 billion. Reducing the number of teams to six would mean a loss of about INR 9000 crores.

3)    Official broadcasters will suffer massive losses. It is believed that if CSK and RR are barred from playing, the broadcasters will have to cut back on the rates - currently valued at approximately INR 4.5-5 lakh for a 10-second spot.

4)    The image of BCCI and IPL will suffer a massive blow. The popularity of the event may go down drastically with fans of both teams as well as other cricket enthusiasts shying away. The two teams - CSK and RR are former champions.

5)    There are several key players in the two teams like India skipper MS Dhoni, Royals' skipper Shane Watson to name a few. With these stars sitting out of action, the level and intensity with which the game is played will fall - leading perhaps to a slightly inferior quality of cricket on display.

6) Interestingly, CSK have only eight while RR have nine players in their current side who featured for the same teams last year. This means a bulk of their players from last year have already been bought by other teams in this year's auctions and will beat the ban.

7) CSK picked 20 players while RR bought 25 in this year's auctions.

8)    The two teams will have to pay 10 per cent of the bid amount to its contracted players.

9)    The tournament - currently expected to be played in three phases with the first confirmed to be held in UAE due to general elections in India - could be played at home entirely. The calendar will also shrink considerably.

10)    There will be the threat that the IPL is scrapped completely in which case, overall losses are expected to be around INR 20,000 crore.
